Hey, im currently doing a project where i have to design a way to encourage more people to grow their own fruit and veg via a Homebase "grow your own fuit and veg range" lol

so i need a list of plausible fruit/veg plants that you could grow in roughly a 14cm wide and 12cm tall pot, any ideas?

thanks!

I think tomatoes are the only fruit that you can reasonably grow in a pot.
That's why many don't consider tomatoes a fruit

I think, for most fruit, you'd need at least a container (i.e. a laaaarge pot) to make it work,.

tomatoes, green beans, peppers, herbs, possibly peas? I tried cucumber once but I think it needs more soil and room to grow, only one grew.

You can grow small citrus trees in large pots.

strawberries need to spread. You could probably have small blueberry bushes, but the yield for the effort would be equally small...

I use large windowboxes (~1'x4') for tomatoes, works pretty well, but the soil gets tired by second harvest.

i am incorporating been able to take them out of the packaging and planting, maybe after nurturing them for a period of time in doors and getting the enjoyment of seeing them grow as a baby, so u think things like strawberries could be contained in a small pot when they are young?

sure, as small plants... but I'm not sure they'd yield anything at that size.

A good experiment! Report back!

i dont know how accurate i have to be with the legitimacy of growing these at this scale, i pretty sure my uni wont be bothered when they mark it, but if i go on to enter it into the composition it might actually get used, i'm designing strawberry atm so gonna use that for sure, think i'll also do tomato, runner beans and see what time that leaves me with

Is this with or without the 24 hour police guard to stop someone half-inching them?

They certainly came out that way. I think they were normal carrots, but they didn't grow very big. Still tasted like carrots, though.

Damn, don't they have newspapers up there in York?

All over the country, there's been a massive spate of food theft from allotments and the like. People growing their own due to the credit crunch, then people stealing it due to the credit crunch.

A bonsai fruit tree could open up a lot of possibilities. But I'm sure it would grow slowly, and the yield will be low.

ps - it has to be a vegetable, because it's green & leafy, and people eat the leaves.

My brother had a bonsai like this. My mom watered it occasionally.

points for growing a pineapple and naming it Robert Plant, but points deducted for it not being a lemon tree.

Isn't that kind of confusing for them?

I've discovered over time that any fruiting plant (including vegetables) needs room for roots, or it doesn't do well. My bell pepper plant made the sweetest tasting, but miniature peppers last year because we didn't repot it when it got big. In a couple of weeks we'll be buying a couple of half-whiskey barrels and planting some tomatoes and repotting my pepper plant. I don't think that size container counts as "in a pot."

My bougainvillea needs repotting too, but we're not going to plant it in the ground; I don't want it to take over!

Anybody tried growing sunflowers in pots? I live in an apartment with a small exterior balcony and am trying to figure out what I can plant/grow. It gets western/northern light.
