what surprises me is that the redo-prebinding bug in the package is still there. it's a very straightforward and simple to quash bug that has flitted through a few builds now. it is bogging down the startup time and otherwise tying up the cpu for no good reason at all. not sure why that hasn't been addressed, maybe they're shouting "fooey" at other bugs.

I just downloaded the latest nightly (30/08/2002) and it doesn't let me select it as a default browser. Omniweb, Mozilla, IE, NS7 all work fine.
When I click on an external link with navigator set as the default browser, IE simply opens.
Ho hum..

Sorry, but what's this "CVS" thing, and did Chimera create a "CVS" folder at the root level of my machine?

Same here on the 8/31/02 build as well. Any ideas on a fix? Besides, of course, waiting for a build that fixes the issue..

I'd like to see the developer fix the browser window so that it can support the "textured" appearance if one wishes to turn it on.
Currently when enabling textured window appearance on the browser window the text on the page cannot be selected and the status bar has the white aqua stripe background.

Yeah, I just downloaded the 31/08 build hoping it would fix it. I'm glad it's not just me.
I'm using Mozilla atm, but one thing annoys me. Every time I click on an external link, it opens a new window and I just want it to open a new tab. Damn annoying.

It launches, then after the boot sequence finishes it 'Unexpectedly Quits'
It's an iMac 400 DVD, 128 MB of RAM
and it's a clean install.

The 2nd September build works fine for me apart for the same "Navigator can't be default browser" thing.

Given that this diff is the latest checked in to the Chimera source tree, and also given that this latest checkin occurred on 21 August, I am wondering why all of you are running around claiming that there are variations between the nightlies since then....
I presume that the nightlies are being built automatically from the source in the CVS tree, and if that is true, then all the nightlies since 22 August should be exactly the same, byte for byte.
Please, someone (who knows) correct me if I am wrong.

If you want to set the minimum font size in Chimera, just edit the prefs.js file in the following directory:
~/Application Support/Chimera/Profiles/Default/<some weird text>/
Add the following line to the file:
user_pref("font.minimum-size.x-western", 11);
You can change the 11 to whatever minimum font size you want to use. 11 is mine.
You can also set Chimera to ignore page fonts and always use your chosen fonts by adding the following line:
user_pref("browser.display.use_document_fonts", 0);
Good luck,
zen

I fixed the problem by deleting the Chimera Profile in Application Support. I am happily posting in Navigator now.

WOW. The latest nightly build is looking pretty nice.
It fixes some font issues I was having and the rollover slowness is MUCH improved.
Kudos to the Chimera guys. Keep up the good work!

I have been using the 8/17 build of Chimera and decided to DL 9/3 build. Does anyone else feel that it is faster? For the longest time www.intellicast.com would not load- it would crash but tonight chimera just blew right throught it. Wow. Honestly what feels faster on this build is not so much the rendering speed rather the caching. I am really pleased with these software people.

Its possible the auto-builds are also grabbing the latest mozilla source as well as the Chimera front end. As such - even if there are no changes to the Chimera portion, any changes to Mozilla follow through.
I don't know this for a fact...but its possible.
The two things I REALLY want are:
1) Flash fixed - its like 20 pixels down or something
2) Text fields to work better. Currently typing is just lagging.

OK, got the latest nightly - my goodness. Its MUCH better.
For one, the Flash now works. Two, typing in text is a lot faster. Too bad text typing still doesn't have spell checking ala OmniWeb
But at least now I've got a great browser I'm happy to use again.

Yep, and it can be accepted as the default browser yet again. And it's not crashing on my "test" pages.
Seems they've been doing a bit of cleaning up. Nice.

Download the 4th September nightly. I don't actually think it's 0.5, they've just changed the splash screen in preperation for the 0.5 release like they did for 0.4. But it's still improved.

The font bug in the prefs still exist, if you even look at that pref pane wrong, it will screw up all your fonts.

I just downloaded this newer version (or soon to be newer version) but I hate to admit it but its actually slower on my machine (pismo 400/768/48/10.2) both on rendering and using the back button. Downloading stuff does seem to be faster. I dont know why the rendering is slower- but they added (much like in IE), at the lower left more info on what is being rendered. Scrolling (on this non-QE machine) is choppy again. Either way I will be reverting back to 8/17 build until this speed issue is resolved.

I cant agree that its any slower on my Dual 800 machine. This 0.5 build dated 04-9 is noticable faster than any of the other nighly builds i have tryed so far. Its beginning to be in class with IE for windows. Cant wait to see the final 1.0 build.

How is the bug where flash content would dissapear after being initially drawn? What does "improved flash" mean? I look at the bugtracker and it appears that nothing has been removed. Is it being updated, or have these bugs yet to be addressed?
Thanks,

.5 breaks Microsoft Mouse pref panel kinda. Back and forward buttons don't work in .5. I hurriedly went back to .4.

Didn't work for me because I don't have the
<some weird text> file in my default folder, just a folder named "if4duf49.slt"

Oh my god.. it got quite better!
Yeah.. text input is still a little bit lagging.. but caching is good now. My hardriver is not thrashing like before..
I'm testing it.. and I'll make a little review on my website (in french) here

I am a fool.
CVS link that actually returns results.
Chimera rocks. I now consider it to be as fast as IE on the PC.
That's something I've been wanting on a Mac for years now. If they can just speed up the text field input speed I'll be laughing.

OK, I have a BIG problem with the last few nightlies. I'm using ChimeraKnight to update, and the last 3 or 4 times I've tried I end up with a very dodgy browser.
When it launches, the bookmarks drawer ends up floating disembodied at the bottom left corner of my screen, until I click it a few times so it goes away. Also when I close the window I'm greeted by the splash screen just sitting there! No clicking gets rid of that. I didn't do anything else, just quit and reverted to the last version (build: 2002082005).
I'm using 10.1.5 on a 600 MHz iBook btw. Anyone else had this problem?

It sounds like the ChimeraKnight bug that emerged a week or two ago. I think this will fix things for you:
1) Download the newest version of ChimeraKnight.
2) Drag your current Chimera nightly build to the trash. Don't install over it. Just throw it away.
3) Get a completely fresh, new copy of Chimera.
You may want to do step 3 before step 2
Lots of things got moved around in the Chimera bundle recently, and CK was leaving some of the old cruft behind when it installed the new stuff, which lead to all sorts of odd behavior.
Hope this helps.

Anyone else not able to print from the lastest nightly builds of Chimera? It gets sent to the queue but it just sits there trying to open the printer but never does. In every other app printing works fine.
Any ideas?

I was pleased to note in a recent nightly that when new tabs are created, the cursor is automatically placed up top in the URL field. I was waiting for that one.
Refinement is coming steadily. Tons more to do, but it is a very nice and usable browser right now.
I wish it would automatically open downloaded files (rather than leaving the download window open) and I'd like to see pop-up menus for the Back and Forward buttons.
Text entry is not the best but these days it does seem to keep up with me....

They changed the format of the bookmark file from html to xml, I lost them all. What's more, Navigator crashed on me until I figured out that I needed to delete the file.

I would guess the gcc31 build was compiled in the new gcc format much like Jaguar was. By the way, the official .5 build is up.

Hey... who let this thread die???
Just d/l the 18/9 build and it's lovely! The textarea / input boxes are even still more responsive (although that's not saying much), but there's been a couple of noticable enhancements.
There's a 'store passwords in the keychain' and 'autofill passwords' preference in the 'Privacy' panel, and there's also a 'Popup Blocking' pane in the 'Navigation' pane.
The ugly 'down' state for aqua buttons has also been fixed.
We're on the way to make Mozilla/Netscape totally unnecessary!!!

Thanks for the Keychain tip. That was my biggest gripe with Chimera and I hadn't looked in preferences since upgrading. Since 0.4, its replaced all my other browers.
Tabbed browsing rocks! I use Mozilla on MonopolySystem's noWinner - XtremelyPainful (MS Win XP) at work for that reason. I do hope that Chimera will left me close a tab by right clicking on it some day.

Now that the browser is looking farily good, what's the chance of them doing the same kind of project with mozilla's Composer component?
I'd love to see a OS X "native" version of Composer made as it's own application.
