I can't insert CDs into the combo drive on my TiBook 800. I can push a CD in 1/3 the way and then it stops. I took it to the Apple store in Chicago and they said they could fix it for $310. I can't purchase Apple Care because the 1 year warranty expired a month ago. I've searched all over the Internet for a replacement drive (CW-8121) but I can't find one. I'd like to buy a new drive and replace it myself. I could always send it to PowerBookResq, but they want $375 for a new combo drive and $475 to upgrade to a SuperDrive. I really don't want to spend much money - I want to save for a G5.

If anyone knows where I can buy a new CW-8121, please let me know.

I've been thinking of just going for the SuperDrive through PowerBookResq, but it is a lot of money for a computer that is over a year old.

Opinions?

Well about the only place I know that you can buy a new drive is from the same people who make the SuperDrives for Cubes: MCE. For $329 they'll install it for you, see HERE . Of course, the Apple Store will do it cheaper, so my only hunch really doesn't yeild much.

If you could afford the weight, a FireWire drive may cost less and do the same tasks while helping you save up for a G5. And if your warranty is only a month up, if you find the right Apple person, you may get lucky w/ some sympathy.

When I was at the Apple Store, the guy at the Genius Bar asked his manager if he could sell me Apple Care even though my warranty expired a month ago, but the manager said no.

Hmm...well, did you register your machine w/ Apple right after getting it? If not, you *may* could fudge your purchase date & get away with it.
