I am working on a personal studio, and almost everything is on a rack, mic compresors, voice effects, reberbs and all, I am planing to buy a g4 just to run audio applications only, somebody told me, that I can use a Xserve instead of a desktop g4 and it will be more confortable to work with , because I will have it to on a rack like all the other stuff.. I laugh at first but I think maybe he had a point. maybe it is a great idea, so, this is the question:
Can the Xserve be use like a normal G4 desktop without problems?

It depends... Do you mind the deafening noise? If not, then you're all set.

Xserve has VERY loud fans. Seems like that would be bad for a recording studio.

Technically you can, but at the price of an Xserve it would probably be better just to get a G5. They're much more powerful, and quieter to boot.

The 2nd gen Xserves aren't that loud. Sure they're louder than a G5, but they're MUCH quieter than the original 1 GHz models.

Yeah, but they're still servers. Not meant for quietness. Just get a G5.

How big is your rack? (wow. I just found a legitimate use for that sentence, and I'm not even gonna get slapped for it).

Stick a G5 in there sideways.

dont have the space for the g5 sideways, it will be better the xserve, and I will not have any problem with sound , 'cause the mic is on the other side of the editing studio,.. and if you say the xserve will work, it will be better because you can stuck 4 drives for backup recording ... Let's see what happens...

We had one set up in an office with 3 people. It was sooooo.. loud we moved it out. If you can keep it in another room, I say go for it.

Please post some pictures of your rack.

I have the same kinda set up. I am useing a DIGI 002 and I use the Xserve as a scratch/ backup disc. My rack was to short in the back to hold the xserve so I did a little google searching and found this.

You can link them up with other ones but I only could afford one xserve. Havent had any troubles with the vertx if I do I will let you know.

Most audio racks aren't deep enough to fit an xserve. Check the stats, its likely that a powermac with rackmount adapter will still be cheaper and quieter. Nearly everyone comments on how large xserves are upon first seeing how deep the boxes actually are.

The xserve is way too loud to be in the same room as your mics. Its designed to sit in a dark closet where noise isn't an issue. Hell, the sound of from a single 24 port switch is enough to drive anyone insane. Next to these, it makes no sense for xserve to have been designed with noise as a consideration. And if they're quiet, how do you know they're running. Most IT monkeys are highly attuned to the proper hum of their computer room.

If your porpoise asks for an xserve, I'd get it! But I'd like to know why you keep it on your desk.

Uh... The G4s just about fit in standard racks taking up, what, 2.5U or so, stacked sideways. The G5 is a good couple of inches taller, so I'd guess it's too tall to be rackable sideways

I've never seen a desktop porpoise. Do you wax it often?
