Read here.

My 11-year old came home with a friend's dead old iPod and when I asked him what he was doing with it, he said that he wanted to try to "fix it." He said that his recent issue of Popular Science had an article in it about the iPod. Sure enough, it's there and it's interesting.

Good read!

i think the front page news section of macnn had a link to it too...or it was another mac news site. either way, popular science is always a good read. they come up with a number of cool things to do/try/make.

edit: yup, it was macnn (among others) http://www.macnn.com/news/23607

He's repairing it himself? A little 'working class' isn't it? How awfull for you. Why don't you just go and buy him 12 so he's never tempted to get his hands dirty ever again. Or send him to a boot camp.

That's so funny. I was literally just reading that article in my Dentist's office not an hour ago. I just got back to the office to see this thread. And this weekend, my gf's original 5gb iPod crapped out so I've been researching replacing the battery myself.

20 years ago when everything wasn't yet digital, miniaturized and made of non-moving parts, fixing things (ok, many times attempting to fix) was really fun.

I'd imagine the threshold for succeeding in fixing, or even getting any feedback from a device like an iPod would be high and even the attempt kinda discouraging. But I hope I'm wrong.

This article seems like nice encouragement for exploration.
