I am thinking about a cinema display with a G5 I'm configuring for purchase in the next month. I realized that two 20's are pretty much the same price as one 23". Which should I go for? I do mostly normal stuff right now, (web surfing, email, chat, iTunes, iPhoto, etc), though the plan is to start playing with video.

I'm getting a 23" and will combine it with a 17" CRT the I have here, later with a 17" TFT -- 23" as main display, 17" for palettes & co.

get the 2 20's! My old 20 inch cinema is amazing after almost 2 years and the extra real estate w/ the 2 vs the one should give you a lot more real estate to play with.

I would go for the 23" display because of the 16:10 aspect ratio. 2x20"displays is "pretty" wide!

yeah, but you can work full screen on something, and have a complete other display to work with. you'd be surprised how nice this can actually be. besides, the 23" is only three inches diagonally larger than the 20".. yet, you get TWO 20" displays!

Well, two 20"s are a total of 3,528,000 pixels and one 23" is 2,304,000 pixels. On the other hand, I can only get Applecare on one monitor, not on two.

lol, and I'd suggest the 30 at that point.

if for no other reason than the insanely high resolution and the fact that you will have no need for a second display.... at leas, you shouldn't.

remember 2 two's will split your video card. i would just go with the 1 23" 2 monitors is nice but only if you have 2 video cards. i used dual 19" crt's for a while with my radeon 9600xt no real problems but got video lag sometimes so i switched back to just one until my 23" comes in may.

I'd get the 2x20". In fact, I'm planning to buy 2x20" Dell monitors (why pay an extra $400 for the same display hardware?). OK, I won't have firewire ports in my monitor, but I'll have twice as many USB 2.0 ports, and I could buy more firewire ports tthan I'll ever need with the price difference.

Remember, you don't have to put the diplays next to each other. With VESA mounts on the wall or on articulated arms, you can easily stack them above each other, which makes a LOT of sense to me. I'll keep my work right at eye level, and browsers, emails, pallets, and things up high.

Additionally, I haven't called to confirm it yet, but I beleive that the Dell monitors can bve rotated 90 degress, so you could have two vertically oriented monitors next to each other, which would work really well for me. I know that the 4:3 Dell branded LCD displays can be rotated 90 degrees, but it isn't clear if the 16:10 ones will do it as well.

Be aware that video rotation on the Mac is only available with certain retail ATI video cards; it is not supported on Apple OEM cards (ATI or nVidia).

Edit: both models of Radeon 9800's, Radeon 8500 and Radeon 9200.

and I have to tell you, rotation is pretty swell for reading PDFs and for playing vertical shooters

it's also on the X800 XT.

The 20" is also 30 pixels too short to play back 1080i content.

I agree with ganesha, for the 1 x 23" especially since this is the "year of HD". Playing HD back native has got to be sweet, I'm stuck with the old 23" 1600x1200 display.

Yes. Thanks.

I say one 23". I had two 17" a couple years ago... having a seam down the middle kinda sucks.
