Im trying to update my blue and white g3 to panther from 10.0. It will boot off of the disk but when it loads, the screen is in all shades of gray. if i boot back to 10.0 its just fine. anyone have a way to fix this?

i think the firmware is updated. but i thought you couldnt update it from 10? i thought it required os 8 or os 9. Oh and if it makes a difference, it has a bizarre ATI capture card in it. could that be the issue?

Well, take the bizarre card out and try again! Post back if this does not work. How much RAM do you have?

Panther works good on the B&W G3's... so maybe you should check that that card is compatible with OS X. How good is it compared to the Rage 128 Pro that those machines shipped with?

Have you upgraded 10.3 to 10.3.9 yet?

Sounds like a video card issue.

i did upgrade to 10.3.9. i can manage to get the video to work correctly if i use this hack i found at macintouch.com.

"The following Terminal command overrides 10.3's new boot behaviour, and loads from the card ROM as in prior versions of system 10:
% sudo nvram boot-args="romndrv=1"
[enter admin password]
Re-boot your computer."

Yeah, I was just curious how it stacked up to the Rage 128 Pro, because maybe it wasn't powerful enough for OS X. Good you got it working.

You could probably grab a Radeon 7000 PCI card on eBay for that machine for pretty cheap.
