So for a few years now I've wanted another Ibanez S series with the wizard neck.

I had one back in 89 that I loved, but it got stolen.

The ones I bought after that simply didn't match up to quality. I come later to find out that those particular S series guitars were made in the custom shop in California.

Now all that shop does is make guitars for bands that promote their products.

Most Ibanez guitars are made in Japan, or Taiwan. The latter are known to be lesser quality.

They have a higher end Ibanez called the "Prestige" that was rumored to be like those original Custom Shop Ibanez. (Hand made necks etc)

So I tried these guitars out the past 3 years and all of them have been consistently excellent. Meaning, sounds great, and plays great. Most had EXTRA low action with no buzz or fretting out, like my original did.

Here is a pic of my original

These guitars have REALLY thin necks and bodies, but still sound great.

Here are pics to put it in perspective.

The wizard neck

THIN and FAST. And it doesn't make my hand tired after 20 minutes of playing.

A view showing how thin these guitars are

And finally, the one I bought.

It has a mahogany body and a bubinga top.

Notice, this is a bolt on, but it lacks the old bolt on "Block" that got in the way. (Look at the pic of the older one to see said block)

The headstock is nice as well. The weird thing about Prestige guitars is, they don't come with trussrod covers. Not even holes for screws.

It has only one fretboard marker on the 12th fret. And it's cool.

I like that.

This guitar retailed for $1499 new in 2000. They sell for around $600 - $800 on ebay in mint condition. As you can't get s series with the wizard neck anymore.

This one had a few clearcoat finish nicks, and the guy had the reserve set for $400.

I got it for $415.

Thinking about putting EMG active pickups in it.

Cool. I just bought the koa-topped Special Edition Fender Tele and Start. These are my first Fenders (I'ma Gibson man).

Rehosted pics. Are you seeing them now?

Photos didn't show up RAIL. TEASE!@!

And Strats are awesome. So are teles.

I learned to play on my dad's 69" Tele.

It had HUGE ass strings on it thought. And I didn't know any better at 14.

The first really good guitar I had was a Gibson Modern. Which was ugly as all get out.

Then a Gibson SG. It was gun metal grey. 80s model.

Traded it upright and a couple hundred for the Ibanez you see above.

Owned 3 Ibanez 540 Ss, One 550, a 560, an 540r

Then I got into PRSs. Owned two of those.

And now I am back to Ibanez.

Sweet. I likes me a Wizard neck. Still running two '89 RG550s.

Yup the ZR trem is nice, but I like the low pro edges better.

I didn't know or forgot you like Ibanez Doofy.

89 550s? Maple neck? I owned a 1990 550 black with maple neck.

I wish I hadn't sold it.

Don't sell those 550s Doofy, you have to buy Prestige models to get that good if a Ibanez now.

They don't make em retail like that anymore.

Have you seen the new Prestige RG neck-throughs?

MAN that is some HOT work there.

Yeah, they're maple board. One's a Desert Sun Yellow, the other a Fire Alarm Red (orange, basically).

I like Lo-Pros, but prefer the original Edge (which is what mine have got).

No way I'm selling them (heck, I learnt that lesson after selling an original JCM800 and an Ibanez sharkfin V), since Ibanez only do rosewood boards now - and rosewood boards are the work of the devil. Although I have gotta go bite the bullet and buy one of those RGs with the Roland driver soon.

Yeah, I've seen the new through-necks. They'd be sweet if they were maple boards!

I know those colors very well. You can't get em like that anymore either.
I like Lo-Pros, but prefer the original Edge (which is what mine have got).
I like the lower profile of the Lopros compared to the Edge. They both are almost identical.
I think I have an old Edge laying around my house.
But I don't like the ZR... good idea, the feel of it is just kinda mushy..

I like my rosewood and ebony boards.

Maple is ok, just not for me.

I'm getting used to the medium jumbo frets (my LP frets are thin and fast), and the wood is gorgeous -- it's koa. Now, this koa isn't as nice as the koa on my Taylor T5, but that's a $3000 guitar.

I'm also a rosewood fingerboard fan, which both these Fenders have (as well as birdseye maple necks).

Here's a shot of my Taylor T5:

And no, that's not a scratch behind the bridge, it's just a highlight.

The wizard necks have the biggest frets they make for guitars

Yeah I have seen that page. I like the RG/Jem body shape, but the guitar itself is just to "big" for me.

Bigger than strats even it seems.

I purchased this guitar a week ago. I have been waiting to buy one since they were released.

It's the LP Page Custom Authentic. This is not a picture of my actual guitar (mine has a pretty serious flame on it).

It will be making its live debut in a few weeks.

Yeah I LOVE that Lespaul.

Nice.

I just don't like the clubbiness of the necks. And my shoulder doesn't like em either.

I play for long periods of time sometimes. I've been on 5 hours stretches etc. Another reason I got this saber.

BTW Doofy, ever see the J-custom and prestige model Ibanez RGs with the maple necks?

They are just as good/better than the 550.

Plus they come with the all access neck joint which I feel is one of the best things that happened to Ibanez guitar design.

I had a twiddle with the maple 1550 (Prestige) before they stopped making them. And I've spanked a few maple JEMs in my time. Never seen a custom J with a maple though.

Here is a maple neck J-custom

http://www.ibanezrules.com/images/gallery/rg2001.jpg

What I never understood, and no one could ever explain is why certain J-customs and Prestige Ibanez guitars have no truss rod cover.

Odd

Yeah lots of people complaining to Ibanez about the drab colors they come with now.

Greys, Dark Blues, Deep reds.

I like them a lot. But people want their Desert Sun Yellows.

That's a nice looking Ibanez. Congrats.

I'm just learning how to play. I got this Epiphone Les Paul from my brother who just bought a deluxe Tele. It's very comfortable for me to play but I'm always going over to my parents' house and picking up my Dad's Strat. Hopefully, I'm getting a Tele for Christmas...

The PRS is gone. The Wide Fat neck was hurting my hands after about a hour of playing.

Hence the reason I got such a thin neck this time.

We both know how thin those wizard necks are

I'm totally in love with Telecasters now, so I just bought an American Deluxe Telecaster, rosewood fretboard, etc.

This is a shot of the same guitar in a different finish and neck, but it shows the binding mine will have:

SWEET! I first learned to play the guitar on a 1969 tele with 11 gauge strings.

It was my dad's. I soon after got a Gibson SG with 9s.

That neck pickup on a tele is something else.

A lot of people don't know that the solo to Stairyway to Heaven was done on a tele.

So was most of the 1st Zepplin album and I believe some of the second.

Meh. You guys must have missed the memo about Telecasters. Only three males on the planet are legitimately allowed to play them: The Boss and Status Quo. That's it.

Because they're a girl's guitar. They're for girls, I tell ya. Can't perform shred-fu on a Tele. Girls can't perform shred-fu. Therefore, they're a girls' guitar.
