Apple released a new Airport Extreme yesterday, but nothing is new.....so the question remains......are they really new?
Or is this a branding secret to get the consumer to feel like its new, when it is actually the same product?

We're all going to die, anyway. I'll at least have the fond memory of having a strong wifi signal in the loo.

Speeds are directly related to signal strength, so siddown.

Nonionizing radiation hasn't been directly correlated to cancer and isn't a big threat unless it's high power or close to you where it will heat your body.

Yes, you can greatly diminish the exposure by not getting any devices that use radio transmission. Hope this help.

I get good speed/range with the previous generation model, so I'm not sure it's worth the upgrade. Still, some improvement is nice I guess.

Spheric's quoted power in watts is actually milliwatts, so the highest power level in those numbers is actually a little over 1/3 watt... That works out to so little exposure at the source that it is no hazard at all.

As a comparison, if you've ever driven past a radio or TV station's transmitter towers (the huge arrays of towers, not the line-of-sight microwave links), you've been exposed to significantly higher levels of EM radiation, building up a "dose" much higher than your daily exposure to your own home network's field. You'll note that there are often homes not too far from such towers-and you'll also note that nobody has published huge expose-type studies about the hazards of living near broadcast towers...

I have a much earlier Time Capsule (maybe 2006-ish??? Can't really recall) -- so I'm guessing I would see a significant increase in speed and performance?

That's what I said The freqs used are nonionizing and are safe so long as they are low power (which they are).

My personal, anecdotal evidence is that Time Capsules flat-out suck compared to Airport Extremes.

I get about 8Mb down from my TC and something in the neighborhood of 20 down from my AE.

Please hold the applause until someone has the opportunity to bring in some sort of completely unrelated and/or untrue "information" for us to marvel at.

I felt specifics were needed here. FUDsters hate that, though they thrive on "refuting" statements that are accurate but lack hard data.

Yes and no. It depends on both the access point and the client. If the client isn't up to snuff, it won't matter.

Word on the street is that the new model supports the 450Mbps triple-antenna mode available in the newest iMacs.

Considering the minor (if any) improvements for the average consumer, am i better off getting a refurb last-gen Airport Extreme over the new one? Apple sells the refurb for $129.

(BTW. I just bought the new 2TB Time Capsule but will return it. It works fine, but i quit using Time Machine and as I was waiting the required 40hrs to copy 2TB of sensetive data to the internal drive I started wondering how I'd get it out if I'd need an emergency backup or disk failure. I've driven a spike through old failed drives to ensure data isnt recovered but the TC requires sending it in to Apple for repair)

Initial backup and full restore should ALWAYS be done via network cable.
