those are my questions!
can i do monitor spanning?
and
can i run a 17" lcd from the new 12"?
(ie is there an adaptor i can use)
seems to me, the 12" with these capabilities would be awesome...

The answer to all of your questions is yes -- unless you want to use an Apple monitor. As long as the LCD you are using has a VGA input, you can do monitor spanning just fine.

so, you can't use apple studio displays with the 12'' powerbook? that's really strange. i wonder what apple's reasoning behind that was.

You can't use Apple's monitors with any of their portables without buying expensive adapters. The ibooks and 12" powerbook have VGA not DVI connectors, which require an even more expensive adapter to work with Apple displays...
It's because Apple chose to use the ADC connector, which is proprietary. Dumb if you ask me. I'd rather they just used DVI.

The VGA out won't be as good as DVI. The TiBook VGA out I'd say is pretty good, but not stellar. Vs. DVI though it's no comparison. DVI wins hands down. (Samsung 172T being used for comparison.)
The 12" aluBook out "only" supports up to 1600x1200, which is fine because most LCD screens are much lower resolution.
