Then I think the worst thing that could happen is salmonella or e. colli poisoning.

Bring a change of underwear and pants.

It takes me forever to go through a carton of eggs, so I've eaten many past their sell-by date, with no ill effect. They've always been cooked, though.

I've never gotten sick from eating cake mix. I tell the wife she's just ruining it by cooking it.

No proof, but somewhere I read/heard that eggs are good for three weeks past their sell-by date. Maybe it was Good Eats...

The wife also tells me that the salmonella comes from the outside of the egg shell, not the egg itself. So your risk of getting sick is dependent on how sloppy you were breaking the egg into the bowl. I guess those chicken asses are the problem.

The problem with eggs most of the time is that there is salmonella bacteria on the shells, and maybe a tiny bit gets into the egg when you break the shell to use the egg. If you were careful, you'll probably just worry about all of us knowing that you eat your baking products before baking them and not get sick. On the other hand, if you start feeling nauseous about 6-8 hours after gobbling the batter, you may just save yourself some trouble and head for the nearest emergency room.

In most cases, you don't have a thing to worry about though. I regularly make a double batch of cornbread mix (which uses one egg per batch) and taste the batter from what's left in the mixing bowl after I've poured it into the baking pan. Not even a tingle.

Your wife seriously needs to update herself on food safety. That's totally wrong.

In other news, salmonella is very, very rare in eggs, but it does happen.

But I love batter/dough. Oh so good!

Ok, if he's wrong then I am too. Where DOES the salmonella come from with eggs (when it's present)?

On a show that Sarah Moulton (editor of Gourmet Magazine) hosted, she stated that there wasn't a single case of salmonella from eggs outside of a restaurant setting. She also stated that it was only present on the outside of the shell.

Wikipedia is of no help.

I asked my wife, and she said "Pshaw!* I've licked mixing beaters from every cake I have ever made and I have not gotten sick". Do with that information what you will...

* She actually said this, although I am unsure of the spelling.

What isn't 'dangerous' these days when it comes to food?

Favourite past time, eating the left overs from the baking that are in the bowl. Still alive.

I saw Martha Stewart eat raw cake batter on her show. She noted that she uses fresh eggs and that's usually good enough to be on the safe side. (Don't ask me why I was watching the Martha Stewart show.)

Its not a big deal unless you are keeping the eggs on your radiator.
A month or even two past the date is ok with eggs, if it smells ok, it is ok.
Sh1t, people eat thousand year old ones here and they mostly look fine.

Many times I have eaten raw cookie dough and tasted cake mix, never to any ill effects.

Also, eggs are good for quite some time after their sale date as long as they are refrigerated.
I like my water with hops, malt, hops, yeast, and hops.

To this day my mother insists that it's bad for you to eat raw cookie dough, along with cake batter, etc because it contains raw eggs. . . . However, if I recall correctly, so does Caesar (sp) salad dressing. I've never been hurt by it. YMMV of course.

Alright.

Salmonella is certainly present inside eggs...but it's very, very rare for it to happen. It used to be a bit of a problem on the outside of the shell, but that because an issue a couple decades ago so they implemented some sort of spraying technique that was supposed to fix the problem.

The bottom line is, licking batter and eating dough is delicious, and it's probably worth the odds of salmonella being present in the raw eggs.

This is not true. It may be true in Canada (I know it’s true in Sweden), but it’s not true for the world as a whole.

Eggs are the number one cause of salmonella poisoning here, far more common than poultry.

It used to be a bit of a problem on the outside of the shell, but that because an issue a couple decades ago so they implemented some sort of spraying technique that was supposed to fix the problem.
This is not done (or allowed) in all countries. I’m almost (though not entirely) certain it’s not done in the UK, at least.

Here, scalding is the general practice, since the bacteria die after only a few seconds in direct contact with vaporised boiling water.

Good luck. And if at any point you decide that it is not going to work out, to terminate the date just show her the photo, look her in the eye, laugh moronically, and say: "I licked all the cupcakes."

Fun is a good result from a date. When work and school schedules allow, my wife and I actually go on dates. A nice dinner and maybe a movie, plus fun together are the basic components. I'm glad you had a nice time.

Next time, bake something you haven't tasted before it went in the oven. It'll make an impression.
