Do you think there's a chance Steve Jobs will announce a new hardware revision of AppleTV at MacWorld this January with HDMI, gigabit Ethernet, maybe a built-in audio amplifier?

Oh. Yeah. Okay. Right you are.
Well, I guess any revision will have it too, then! But seriously, no gigabit-E? It seems like that would potentially improve streaming/syncing over a local LAN, and since almost all Macs have gigabit out of the box, it makes a certain amount of sense, no?

Come to think of it, how come so few media servers/extenders also lack gigabit? The only one I can think of (other than an actual Mac/PC/Linux box) that has it out of the box is the Sony PS3.

i think the revision is closer than January...either that, or it's getting phased out. (which i hope not)

I don't think it's needed to stream HD video, is it?

I can tell you this. . . . my local Target has the 40gb AppleTV on Clearance for 185.00, down from 229.99. . . .

Initially, I would have agreed with you. But, the lack of gigabit streaming doesn't seem to have any impact on streaming for me. I stream most of the content that I view through my Apple TV, and most times the streamed content starts right away and never has a hiccup. The only times I ever have a problem are either router or iTunes related.

GigE is simply not necessary for streaming HD video at bitrates that AppleTV can play.

The bandwidth of 100 Mbps Ethernet is more than sufficient, with real world speeds over 60 Mbps.
