Hello all,
I'm looking at getting a set of 5.1 speakers with optical input, so that I can go directly from the optical output on my MBP, and will have DTS or Dolby Digital (and stuff in Logic) outputted properly in surround to the speakers.
Two questions:
- Will this work?
- Can you suggest any good speakers for this?
Thanks.

You'll get 5.1 out of the Mac two ways:
if you use DVD player and if you use an Apple TV. Any other way is not going to happen. Even Perian is not going to do it for you.

Method #3:
Or get any multi-channel interface and set up the channels using Audio/MIDI Setup Utility.
Not sure that applies to the optical output though - I don't believe it does, since that needs PCM or DTS output, IIRC.

Okay - so I need a multi-channel interface. Cool. Guess from then I can just get any speakers with RCA inputs. Nice. Thanks you two.
