WOW.

I have read NOTHING but bad reviews on these. People saying it doesn't give a long enough life. People saying it starts to lose capacity after only a few months. People saying it melts down after 6 months. One user gave it 3 stars. Another, 2. The rest, 1. And thats a lot of 1's.

I've never noticed it with my iBook. Are these batteries an exception?

I mean, I've been ogling the MacBook Pro for a long time now, because its super hot, and lets face it; my iBook really shouldn't have lasted me this long. But if the battery is THAT bad, do I want it?

Apple doesn't make the batteries themselves, they buy the same batteries everyone else is using. I believe the last big battery recall was for batteries that Sony manufactured.

Let's think about this... How often do you find people boasting of how stupendous their (insert product here) is? And how often do people complain about a product not meeting their expectations? Hugely more, right? I think that's the case here. My wife's 4+ year old iBook battery was part of the recall, but there was nothing wrong with it when we sent it back. Lots of charge capacity, no drop off. My MBP's battery is cooking along fine at about 95% health after more than a year of pretty substantial use. I don't think "Apple batteries are crap" is an accurate assessment, though I do acknowledge that a lot of what you'll read here and elsewhere makes it look that way.

With all that said, I'd still wait until something looked out of the ordinary before shopping for a third party battery.

I bought my replacement from FastMac | Performance Upgrades. Fastmac batteries defiantly have better capacity than OEM, but Apple OEM batteries aren't that bad compared to anyone else.

Batteries last between 1 and 2 years in general before they drop charge so fast you can't call it a mobile machine anymore.

I have owned, used and seen more than a dozen Apple laptops. Some have gone through many cycles, some batteries just sit fully loaded. It doesn't matter.

That being said, this applies to all batteries, Dells and HPs as well. Sony for instance makes batteries for many brands.
