A friend recently showed me Spotify and I’m blown away.
Think of the iTMS as a streaming only version but with unlimited access for 9.99€ per month. I honestly haven’t touched iTunes for anything other than iPhone syncing since I’ve started using Spotify. There’s just no point in buying music when you can stream thousands of songs at that price point.
It also has a bunch of other neat features such as collaborative playlists, last.fm scrobbling, P2P streaming or song caching on the local HD.
The only real downside is that I can‘t take the music with me on my iPhone (obviously) but a Spotify Client for the iPhone is in the pipeline. Oh and it doesn’t work in the US or Canada at the moment.

Unfortunately, due to licensing restrictions we are not yet available in your country. We understand that you are currently in United States (your IP address xx.xxx.xx.xx).
WTF ?
It doesn't even tell me what countries are supported.
FAIL.

It's like the iTMS in reverse.
At last we get a cool music service before the US does!

OK, I'll look into it more but so far, why pay when on (for example) last.fm the music is free? There's also plenty of radio stations out there.
Sorry, but I don't 'get it'.

Maybe it lets you choose what tracks you want to listen to and gives you full control over the playback of these tracks, unlike last.fm and Pandora?

Pandora is useless to me for that very reason.

The interface is essentially the same as iTunes, except that your library is all the works held by main distributors (with some notable exceptions of course - The Beatles, if that floats your boat). So you can search by artist, track etc just like iTunes. Information about albums is presented just like iTunes and you can create playlists etc. You have full control over what you play.
In the UK at least, it's free to use (I believe this varies with market). There is a short audio advert (maybe 30 seconds long) every 20 minutes. Most adverts seem to be for current album releases.
So, it's a free iTunes with an almost infinite catalog and with all the nice interface options of iTunes. Version for the iPhone coming too. Hope this helps.

I have it for free, but honestly I didn't see the point. My library is far too vast for me to listen to even the music I already have, and I discover new music releases from multiple sources all the time.

This.
Another nice feature is the ability to share playlists. In iTunes I’m somehow always too lazy to put together a playlist so my whole Library is on shuffle 99% of the time. In Spotify I can just hit one of the 1000 Spotify-Playlist sites á la http://www.spotifyfriends.com/ and import a playlist with one click.
e.g. click this link and seconds later you’ll be listening to the all Pitchfork Top 100 Songs for 2008.
PS: oh wow, I just realized…

What countries is Spotify available in?
We’ve released our free advertising supported version in Sweden, Norway, Finland, the UK, France and Spain. In most other countries Spotify Premium is available for purchase.

So you pay 10€ a month to never own any music? Subscriptions seem like a complete waste of money to me. I'd rather just get 1 album a month and permanently build up my music collection.

No, you pay nothing per month*, get access to the largest library of music in the world (I presume), and not own the music.
