Apple may be preparing to launch new iMacs with 4K-resolution displays in the near future, according to a report. It is claimed new 21.5-inch iMacs equipped with the high-resolution screens will be revealed next week, with Apple allegedly looking to ship the initial batches to stores by October 13, with increased availability of the computer apparently expected in November, in preparation for the holiday shopping period.

Multiple sources of 9to5mac allegedly told the report the 21.5-inch 4K iMac was in production, following after earlier rumors suggesting such a system was on the way. It is believed the new 4K iMacs will have the same appearance as the non-4K variants, except they will include a 4096x2304-resolution screen, marginally higher than typical "consumer 4K" screens with a resolution of 3840x2160. This should in theory give it a pixel density of 218ppi, the same as the 27-inch 5K iMac.

It is almost certain that the 4K iMacs will ship with a higher price tag to match the resolution, if it does launch next week. Since the 5K 27-inch iMac starts at $2,000 compared to the $1,800 the standard 27-inch iMac starts from, this may mean a similar premium will be applied to the 21.5-inch 4K models.

How about a 4K monitor for those of us that bought your mega-expensive Mac Pro cylinders? Its pretty disrespectful to keep cranking out iMacs with hi-res screens while ignoring those of us that bought the highest margin product you sell...

@Mitch, totally agree. I'd also like to see the larger iMacs get the faster flash storage that the laptops already have. It's embarrassing that a laptop has faster storage than a desktop. I'm also trying to understand why the smaller iMac is getting a 4K display. Isn't this size of iMac meant for schools and uses where a 4K display isn't necessary?

how about updates to the macPro (full stop), and while we're at it, how about a midRange macPro (maybe you could transition the old ones to an entry level like you do with iPhones).

I wonder if Apple will include whatever DRM-compliant equipment/software combination required to make 4K Netflix streaming functional? (I don't really care about 4K video personally, but for those who do care about such things it would be nice to see it available on Apple hardware.)
