I've been listing to HipHop since I can remember. Thought I knew all the groups that I needed to know, listen to all the music I needed to hear. I'm on UTube--Common---then I accidentally come across this guy named J Dilla-----who?----and I take a listin.

Beat drops and begins like a music I've never heard.......EVER!!!!!!! He's gone. Such a beautiful music....gone. It changed me....for the first time a music had the power to change ..........everything. I'm kickin myself for not know his work sooner.....its like a love that never was and never will be. Such guilt I feel.

RIP J and thank you for your passion.

Feel that drum beat....those rhythms....the composition. Feel reborn. Understand it or not I could give two sh-i-ts.

I have not. I left the underground awhile ago and the new isht wasn't on par. But one of my boys has been slowly reintroducing me to the new world. I'm an old school cat late 80s-90s but around 04 I lost interest and thought things wouldn't change....Hip-Hop is far from death.

I'll sleep well tonight.

Any website that follow the underground that you good people can suggest?

Mr. Lif sounds nice....much luv.

I luv Megadeth. Yes I said luv. I was always open to different kinds of music. My white boy friends did nothing but
shove that crap in my ears for years....what could a brother do? I'm glad they did tho, but at the same time I did the same with Hip-Hop. It was one of the best times of my teen years....I miss my homies!

Google. J Dilla Lyrics. They're all so thought provoking and intellectual. Here's more:

Now lets take it from tippedy
Hottest thang, went from Jacob to Tiffany's
Could of kept it real with this real nigga
Or kept your mouth closed maybe we could deal witcha
She gets two freaks, the wife and the boss
Had all 3 of 'em liking it raw
Pimp put on wait from fighting them off
In the mall, you see it and like it, it's yours
Thats a nice fit, you ain't gotta price, ****
I pays for it like the mics in The Source
We pack big bags out of SaKs 5th Ave
"Mister, put 'em in the back, where the fifth at"
I need space for all of my womens
In these days, the argue is limited
I replace the broad if she trippin'
It's deep game and all in the pimpin'!

Uh, you got one that's cool
Nowadays everybody got two
That'll do but, I need another one
Yeah, and another one

One won't do, two is not enough for me, no
One won't do it, two is not enough for me, no
One won't do, two is not enough for me, no
One won't do it, two is not enough for me, no
One won't do..

[VERSE 2:]
Lets see, I got one, got two, got..
Tell me do you got what I need
A fourth party that can run our team, you know
Keep 'em in line, 'cause one might need it
This here the guy that your hun might creep with
She might do some freak-nick **** on ya
I keeps to the beats and bonin' them
Whole body blingin' like 3-P-O, nigga
And when i pull that ****er out, it attracts the gold-diggers
With them big 'ol jelly, Smuckered out
Make Dill wanna tuck it in
But the truck got The 5th Element like Tucker's in it
All you hear is them custom 10-inches beatin'
Like 15's, ma can I fit in them jeans
You seem like a true team playa for real, love
**** with cha boy J to the Dilla, yeah

Yep. Top notch stuff right there.

Dude, his lyrics are about bitches, ho's, pimping, slapping women, boning them, carrying .38 snub nosed revolvers, threatning people, etc.

How the hell is this NOT gangsta rap?

do you consider these lyrics gangsta rap? they're from the song Bad Man! by MURS and MURS is the polar opposite of the gangsta rap you are thinking of:

She got me screamin' in public, in the middle of the mall
I lightly touch her arm, what'd the bitch do?, fall
Now they call security, it's about to be drama
I would never hit a woman, I was raised by my momma
But I kinda feel bad even though I didn't do ****
Now I gotta waste time to find a new chick
Someone who understand a man's gotta be a man
I don't wanna have to lie just to get into your pants
And ain't nothin' wrong with a one night stand
that happens twice a week, plus I'm nice in the sheets
And you look like a freak, it'll be to your benefit
A nigga you can ****, and a nigga you can kick it with
I'm sick of this phone tag text message foreplay
I like to be spontaneous, that's my forte
Let's go to my crib and have, sex in the door way
We'd talk all night if you had things your way

There's a difference? lol

Actually, when artist used the word Gangster in interviews or on wax they actually meant for it to be Gangster not Gangsta. But because of thick New York accents it comes out Gangsta. There is no difference. But for some reason spelling it like how it sounds seemed like a cool thing to try and market. It was not!

Gangsta rap?? are you people effing kidding me? Lyrics don't make gangsta rap so much.

I listen to jazz, blues, electro, jungle, rap, all kinds of hip hop, bass, booty bass, downtempo, house, breaks, rock, classic rock, and so on.. I enjoy schooling people on tunes in real life. I won't bother in these forums...

The people that inhabit this forum are not collectively known as intelligent people with an open mind to different types of music. Computer users, yes. Musically open minded, not so much.

I have all of J Dilla's musics, and some awesome tribute stuff too. He was a beat maker first and foremost. His lyrical stuff is not exactly grond-breaking. Just do yourselves a flavor and don't confuse him with gangsta rap. That's UTTERLY RIDICULOUS. You sound like sheltered white people.

Cash excels at being an asshat.

RIP J Dilla

eh, a wiki:

J Dilla was known as a "producer's producer", and was highly regarded by better known producers such as Kanye West, Just Blaze, and Pharrell Williams (who named him as his favourite producer). Many considered him as a musical genius. A large catalogue of his work, mostly unused beats, remains unreleased, and in some cases have been freely passed around through the internet, impressing enthusiasts and adding to his cult-status.

By the late 1990s Jay Dee was known as a major hip-hop prospect, with a string of singles and remix projects, for Janet Jackson, Pharcyde, De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, A Tribe Called Quest, Q-Tip's solo album and others. Some other Jay Dee productions were released without his name recognition, being credited to The Ummah, A Tribe Called Quest's production team, of which he was a member.
[edit]Performing career
2000 marked the major label debut of Slum Village with Fantastic, Vol. 2, creating a new following for Jay Dee as a producer and an MC. He was also a founding member of the production collective known as The Soulquarians (along with Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson, D'Angelo and James Poyser amongst others) which earned him more recognition and buzz. He subsequently worked with Common, Erykah Badu, and Talib Kweli, and the hip hop community began to take notice of his classic hip-hop inspired, breakbeat-laden style.
His debut as a solo artist came in 2001 with the single "**** the Police", followed by the album Welcome 2 Detroit, which kicked off U.K. indie label BBE's "Beat Generation" series. In 2002, Jay Dee, began using the name "J Dilla" (in an attempt to differentiate himself from Jermaine Dupri, who also went by "J.D."), and left Slum Village to pursue a major label solo career with MCA. In addition to producing the entirety of Frank-N-Dank's 48 Hours in 2002, he also worked on a solo album, but neither record was ever released (although the former did eventually surface through bootlegging).
Following the collapse of the MCA album, Dilla recorded the uncompromising Ruff Draft, released exclusively to vinyl by German label Groove Attack. Although the album was little known, it signaled a change in sound and attitude, and his work from this point on was increasingly released through independent record labels. In a 2003 interview with Groove Attack, Dilla talked about this change of direction:
You know, if I had a choice, skip the major labels and just put it out yourself man... Trust me. I tell everybody it's better to do it yourself and let the Indies come after you instead of going in their [direction] and getting a deal and you have to wait, it ain't fun, take it from me. Right now, I'm on MCA but it feels like I'm an unsigned artist still. It's cool, it's a blessing, but damn I'm like, 'When's my **** gonna come out? I'm ready now, what's up?' They're just like they gotta wait on this person and this person and they're firing this person. It's getting crazy. I woulda did a lot better just not even ****ing with them, [and] keep doing what I was doing before
[1]
[edit]Later years and illness
LA-based Producer and MC, Madlib, began collaborating with J Dilla, and the pair formed the group Jaylib in 2002, releasing an album called Champion Sound in 2003. J Dilla relocated from Detroit to LA in 2004 and appeared on tour with Jaylib in Spring 2004.
Despite a slower output of major releases and production credits in 2004 and 2005, his cult status remained strong within his core audience, fueled in part by the unauthorized circulation of his underground "beat tapes" (instrumental, and raw working materials), mostly through internet file sharing.
Articles in publications Urb (March 2004) and XXL (June 2005) confirmed rumors of ill health and hospitalization during this period, but these were downplayed by Jay himself. The seriousness of his condition became public in November 2005 when J Dilla toured Europe performing from a wheelchair. It was later revealed that he suffered from TTP, a rare blood disease, and Lupus.
J Dilla died on February 10, 2006, at his home in Los Angeles, California. His obituary in The New York Times on February 14, 2006, states: "The cause was cardiac arrest, according to his mother, Maureen Yancey." His last album, Donuts was released on February 7, 2006.
[edit]Posthumous work
Aside from Donuts, Dilla completed or nearly completed two more full length releases, during his illness. The first, The Shining, was released on August 8, 2006 by BBE Records. Final production of the album was handled posthumously by Karriem Riggins, whom Dilla had asked to help with the album. According to Riggins, The Shining was "75% completed when Dilla died."
The second, Jay Love Japan, was announced during Dilla's lifetime as an instrumental EP, and does not have a release date. Leaked copies have circulated containing several songs with vocals, presumably added after his death. It quickly garnered comparisons to posthumous Tupac Shakur material, which many fans complain of abusing his legacy by including artists and producers that Dilla may not have had any interest in working with, were he alive.

Stones Throw re-issued Dilla's rarely heard Ruff Draft as a 2/CD, 2/LP set in March 2007. The re-issue contains previously unreleased material from the Ruff Draft sessions and instrumentals.
May 2006 saw the announcement of J Dilla Foundation by Maureen Yancey, Dilla's mother. In February 2007, a year from his death, J Dilla posthumously received the Plug Award's Artist of the Year and also Record Producer of the Year.
R.I.P J Dilla.

Screw that guy, glad he's dead. One less "thug" in the world now. He rapped about slapping women, using them for sex, packing guns under his shirts, fighting other gangs, and overall being a piece of trash. Anybody who thinks his qualities are things to aspire to will likely wind up in prison.

PS: Here's more violent, sexual, trashy lyrics from this stupid gangsta rapper:

"Cant afford to slip, nothin but clips up in my nine
Cause know days and times it ain't to good on the grind
Niggas pockets like ouch, fell off in the drought
Got snot nose nappy headed kids on the couch
Times running out rents due, so what he do?
Grab the twenty two and try to stick it to you
But no not Blu I pack more than a double duece
When you see me roll thru 100 spokes on the coupe
I'm heated not to be cheated **** around and get yo face deleted
I'm waitin on ah broke nigga hatin' take a toke when I'm blazin
Till your head start achin' ain't no praise to god,
straight penetratin' funeral in the makin
Keep my eyes on the streets like street lights
Nigga think I'm lyin' try to creap **** around and get 3 strikes "

Ah, okay, he's talking about blowing people's heads off with his gat. That definitely isn't gangsta rap at all, right? Pffft.

Or how about this one:

Rap is crap. They don't even sing. They just talk about drugs, violence and abuse to women. It doesn't take talent to do that.

I've been obsessed with Clipse lately. I listen to very little hip-hop/rap besides some stuff that gets filtered through from friends, but Hell Hath No Fury is kicking my ass lately.

F*ck those bi†ch-åss niggas, yeah! *nods white-boy head merrily*

Cash is to much of a whiteboy, that's what you get for living in Wisconsin I guess.

My favorite rapper is Immortal Technique, and he says some REAL crude sh!t, but his beats are tight.

I'll have to check J Dilla out.

you're ahead of things if you start tuning into Wale, he's from D.C.

that's wah-lay

he's real nice.

feel free to get it on IM dude.

speaking of crude shlt, Kanye did an edit recently of "Throw Some D's" by Rich Boy. It's tiight! The D's in question aren't rims, but breasts. "Just got a college chick, THROW SOME D's ON THAT BITCH"
so much fun!

EDIT: besides Wale, I've been listening to sorts like Gucci Mane and Tabi Bonney, just lovely. Check it out if you aren't Debbie Downer. Check out some Amanda Blank and Spank Rock and all their friends too while you're at it. You'll be glad you did.

I listen to J5, Deep Puddle Dynamics, People Under The Stairs, Deltron 3030. All rap, but yet, somehow, someway, they're able to rap without referring to women as bitches, talking about guns and drugs all the time, and being ignorant stupid ass thugs that like to intimidate people.

Ghetto/Gangsta rap= rap about bitches and ho's and drugs and capping cops and having gats.

Read the lyrics people. J-Dilla is most definitely 'gangsta'. If you disagree, you're just plain wrong. You don't have to take my word for it:

"A style of rap music associated with urban street gangs and characterized by violent, tough-talking, often misogynistic lyrics."

since you're so keen on quoting smart websites, find me ONE SOURCE that cites J Dilla as a gangsta rapper. Speaking of, I went to answers.com for info on J Dilla (you quoted Answers.com so..) and the word "gangsta" and "gangster" were no where to be found on the page. at all.

J Dilla: Information from Answers.com

You listen to People Under the Stairs but not Slum Village???!?!?!?!?!?!

IGNORANT.

Ignorant. Ghetto rap isn't synonymous with gangsta rap. Quit saying Ho's, it sounds stupid, or rather it makes you sound stupid. it's hoes. Additionally, if I called you a bitch, would I be a gangster? Huh Ca$h?

Are you working on finding a reference to J Dilla being a gangsta rapper? He's only one of the most written about producers around, surely you could find a source besides your own Wisconsion-style beliefs.

You're delusional. His songs are generic ghetto/gangsta rap about being an ignorant piece of trash, beating up women, using them for sexual favors but demeaning them, shooting at people, packing heat, and doing drugs.

A truly inspiring life story, that guy. Thank god he's dead.

You saying you're glad someone's dead is old hat. Doesn't mean much cause you say it all the time.

I have hours of J Dilla, and besides Slum Village (have you listened yet? huh?) there's no J Dilla rapping in his PRODUCING efforts, cause he's a PRODUCER. But even for his rappin', go listen to Slum Village. I just hope no one here is fooled by your posts because you lack knowledge on the subject. You're clearly not in tune to enough hip hop to tell anyone what artists belong to what genre. You ignore anything anyone says if it disproves your ignorant babbling.

You are not an authority, and I'm still waiting on a link from one.

Wow. The trolls a crawling out of the woodwork today... it must be springtime -- troll mating season. Don't feed 'em, or they'll multiply like a handful of gremlins soaking in the pacific.

I found out about JD's death 2 days after the fact. He was one of the most talented, prolific, and slept-on artists in the entire industry. Most folks here have heard something he made and will never know it... his stuff is still in heavy rotation in my collection.

Fans of JD's stuff should also check out Madlib (one of JD's frequent collaborators), Jaylib (the name that JD and Madlib went by on their joint projects), Quasimoto... and all of JD's instrumental series' are classic.
