It's demeaning, it reinforces negative stereotypes, it gives kids the wrong ideals, and the wrong role models, it promotes substance abuse, and the abuse of women. I never understood how people could trash a genre of entertainment for its nihilism, violence etc, then go home and watch "The Sopranos".

I've never seen the sopranos. That said, I don't think many white folks watch the sopranos and feel like it's okay and normal to whack somebody with a car bomb.

Look folks, in many ways rap/hip-hop is still a sub-culture and like all sub-cultures most people can't tell the the difference between the genres within the genre. It's all in the subtleties.

That's why you have people swearing up and down that someone is trying to be "gangsta" simply because of the clothes/jewelry they wear. These people get their definition of "gangsta" from what MTV tells them is "gangsta." Incidentally, these are also the same people think the word "bling" is new and that it's actually still cool to say.
