haha, you can't even come up with a link to prove that someone else, just ONE OTHER PERSON on the earth shares your thought.(just try to make sure that person is an authority or knows their stuff).

Snoop Dogg in '94 = gangster rap

J Dilla ≠ gangster rap. evar.

I don't need a link. It's called common sense, something you apparently lack.

If skills sold,
truth be told,
I'd probably be,
lyrically,
Talib Kweli..
Truthfully, I wanna rhyme like Common Sense
(but I did $5Mil)
I ain't been rhymin' like Common since.

So you're basically saying that in your opinion J Dilla is gansta rap and you don't have a single source to directly back up this claim.

You always clamor on about how you provide links and proof to your accusations, but here you provide none except a dictionary and your interpretation of it.

Pretty lame Rob, sometimes you need to pick battles more carefully.

No, it's not my opinion. Look up the defintion of gangsta rap. Do it now. Then read his lyrics, and get back to me. Opinion has nothing to do with this.

You know what Rob? You are 100% correct.

So can this thread just be about people who actually like this music now?

I've been listing to HipHop since I can remember. Thought I knew all the groups that I needed to know, listen to all the music I needed to hear. I'm on macNN--Common---then I accidentally come across this guy named Centerchannel68-----who?----and I take a listin.

Beat drops and begins like a music I've never heard.......EVER!!!!!!! He's freaking awesome. The lyrics, the culture, the little stars and censored words. I'm kickin myself for not know his work sooner.....its like a love that never was and will always be.

Now that's true classless gangsta rap.

yea, but like all the greats he'll probably get shot and die.

I could just imagine a MacNN field trip to NYC or something where we get to meet a bunch of artists using Macs to produce their music. Ca$h would be the quiet little whitey in the corner.

Dude, I like some rap. But ghetto/gangster rap is ****, marketed for people with **** for brains. It's demeaning, it reinforces negative stereotypes, it gives kids the wrong ideals, and the wrong role models, it promotes substance abuse, and the abuse of women. It's total crap, horrible lyrics, cheesy melodies and then overly produced to help 'sell' the image. It's one big joke, and everyone that's defending J-Dilla is part of it.

I'd agree, if you're talking about movies that glamorize the ghetto and make people want to stay in it.

I guess even a classic movie like "Cool hand Luke" glorifies convicts and makes rebelling look cool... This is not directed at you, but generally, Ive read a ton of posts trashing rap music as a whole, yet no one dares apply the same morals and standards to tv, movies, books, literature. I never understood how people could trash a genre of entertainment for its nihilism, violence etc, then go home and watch "The Sopranos".

You know, I agree with Rob's opinion of this guys "lyrics" but the whole argument about whether it is Ganster Rap or Gangsta Rap (semantics ) is just ridiculous. It doesn't have fit into the Gangster Rap genre to suck…and these lyrics most certainly do suck…IMO.

What's worse is someone trying to argue that their opinion is the correct one. So you hate it, we got it, give it a rest already.

Being in debt and celebrating a lower deficit is like being on a diet and celebrating the fact you gained two pounds this week instead of five.

I've never seen the sopranos. That said, I don't think many white folks watch the sopranos and feel like it's okay and normal to whack somebody with a car bomb.

But it's not opinion. Read any definition of ganster or gangsta rap. Now read that asshat's lyrics. It fits, exactly.

just as I don't leave the club after hearing some song about "youuuu'zeee a hooeeeeee" and start calling everyone a hoe and smackin my bitchez up. well, sometimes.

Beastie Boys

"High Plains Drifter"

Cause I'm the High Plains Drifter,
And I'm a drifter
The Hight Plains Drifter,
And I'm a drifter
They can't catch me never gonna find me
They're never gonna know that I'm the High Plains Drifter

Pulled over to the river to take a rest
Pulled out a pair of pliers and pulled the bullet out of my chest
Fear and loathing across the country listening to my 8 track
I Reached behind the seat and grabbed a Kool from the pack
Long distance from my girl and I'm talking on the cellular
She said that she was sorry and I said yeah the hell you were
Check my rear view mirror check the gold tooth display
Check out the odometer and I was on my way
Cause I'm a high plains drifter the best that you can get
A strapped shoplifter a pirate on cassette
Bust a Travis Bickle when I feel that I'm getting pushed
Don't step to me or you're gonna get mushed
I'm Doing 120 plowing over mail boxes
Radar detector to tell me where the cops is
Spend another night at the Motel 6
It's five dollars extra get the porno flicks
Concoct a black and tan in my brandy snifter
I'm a kleptomaniac K-Mart shoplifter
Cash flow getting low so I had to pull a job
I found a nice place to visit but a better place to rob
I left my car outside and the engine still revvin'
Time to get busy at 7-Eleven
Then I went inside to make my withdrawal
I saw what he had had but I had to take it all

Knucklehead deli tried to gyp me on the price
So I clocked him off the turban with the bag of ice
Cause I'm mellow like Jell-O cool like lemonade
I made my getaway and I thought that I had it made
I feel like Steve McQueen a former movie star
Look in my rearview mirror seen a police car
Ballantine quarts with the puzzle on the cap
I couldn't help but notice I was caught in a speed trap
Dirty Mary Crazy Larry on the run from Dirty Harry
Stash the cash in the dash but my gun I did carry
I'm seeing blue and red flashing deep in the night
I got my alibi straight and I pulled over to the right
Cop knocked on my window and said Boy where's the fire
you've got a mailbox on your bumper and a bald front tire
Outta the car longhair your goose is cooked
Read me my rights fingerprinted and booked
Makin' like a D.T. driving a Gran Fury
Wherever I hang my hat's my home and my past is kind of blurry
Every dog will have its day and mine will be in front of a jury
I'm the High Plains Drifter and I'm never in a hurry
Read me my rights as if I didn't know this
Threw me in the tank with the drunk called Otis
With his five o' clock shadow he smelled of 3-day old beer
My man turned to me and said why are you here?
I said I'm charming and dashing I'm rental car bashing
Phony paper passing at Nix Check Cashing
I went before the judge he sent me to the Brooklyn House of D.
He said you behave son or we'll throw away the key
Harry Houdini'd out the cuffs I kicked the screw in the knee
Took the bailiff's wallet and went straight to O.T.B.
I had a good feeling easy come easy go
I bet on one horse to win and another to show
And sure enough that knak came in
Brought my ticket to the window and collected my win
Broke into my new car with a wire coat hanger
Hot wired hot wheeled and Suzy is a headbanger

BEASTIE BOYS LYRICS

"Looking Down The Barrel of a Gun"

I'm rolling down the hill snowballing getting bigger
An explosion in the chamber the hammer from the trigger
I seen him get stabbed I watched the blood spill out
He had more cuts than my man Chuck Chillout
24 is my age 22 is my gauge
I'm writing rhymes on a page going off in a rage
Out on a mission a stolen car mission
Had a little problem with the transmission
3 on the tree in the middle of the night
I have this steak on my head cause I got into a fist fight
Life comes in phases take the good with the bad
You bought those coins on the street and you got had
Because it's all high spirit you know you gotta hear it
Don't touch the mic baby don't come near it
It's gonna get you it's gonna get you
It's gonna get you girl it's gonna get you

Looking down the barrel of a gun
Son of a gun son of a bitch
Getting paid getting rich

Ultra violence running through my head
Fuzzy navel y'all making me see red
Rapid fire Louie like Rambo got bullets
I'm a gonna die harder like my kid Bruce Willis
I love girlies waxing and milking
Coordinating chics is my man Dave Scilkin
Predetermined destiny is who I am
You got your finger on the trigger like the Son of Sam
I am like Clockwork Orange going off on the town
I've got homeboys bonanza to beat your ass down
I'm mad at my desk and I'm writing all curse words
Expressing my aggressions through my schizophrenic verse words
You're a headless chicken chasin' a sucker free basin
Looking for a fist to put your face in
Get hip don't slip knuckle heads
Racism is schism on the serious tip

¢a$h, I could go on and on and on and on. I'm positive I could find some much better examples too. As for the beastie boys lyrics here, they're only covering the GUNS and SHOPLIFTING and RUNNING FROM THE POLICE aspect of what you're upset about. and they're certainly not gangster rap. So if I were inclined to do so (which I'm not at the moment) I (or anyone else) could find songs that fit your "gangster rap by lyrics alone" standard.

ridiculous.

Also, Rob, you need to see Sopranos.

It's an amazing show with major production quality (better than most movies IMO) and it's fun watching mobsters behave badly.

Luckily Season 1 is probably the best season. Check it out dood.

Look folks, in many ways rap/hip-hop is still a sub-culture and like all sub-cultures most people can't tell the the difference between the genres within the genre. It's all in the subtleties.

That's why you have people swearing up and down that someone is trying to be "gangsta" simply because of the clothes/jewelry they wear. These people get their definition of "gangsta" from what MTV tells them is "gangsta." Incidentally, these are also the same people think the word "bling" is new and that it's actually still cool to say.

Plus, the beastie boys were never gangsters. They were white kids who liked to party, not do drive bys. Their 'gangsta' lyrics are a joke, because nobody takes them seriously. 50 cent, on the other hand....

Uh... whatever man. I'm sure when 50 cent gets off hte stage he's a very normal person who speakers regular english and enjoys sunday movies. Since you're defending him, I'm guessing you listen to him, so I'll say something you can probably understand: YOU IGNANT!

I don't listen to 50 cent nor do I even like his music. however someone gave you lyrics that, based on your logic, you would consider gangsta, yet you change your own definition to suit your needs. not very surprising.
