Seriously guys, polities aside, I never check this thread on BSG day because I don't want to risk seeing a spoiler. It's like walking into your parents bedroom without knocking, you might just see something you can never un-see

Annnnyway... effing great episode.

Good episode. That's all I'll say for now. I'll be curious to see where things develop from here.

Well, that was interesting. Similar to the events of Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II, in the way that the story advances forward really far.

Overall, I enjoyed it. Some really good tension between characters. Lee finally stepped up to the plate, and Baltar finally did something useful. The final four trying to figure out what to do. And I love how Tigh put himself on the line in order to save the fleet. However, I found Adama to be out of character. He's usually such a good, consistent character but in this episode he just seemed like such a flake.

Unfortunately the last 15 minutes or so felt rushed. There was some really interesting aftermath to the revelation of the final four and the cylon truce that could have been explored. Enough to make a whole other episode out of. But it was all swept under the rug in the rush to jump to Earth. However, I do like that its discovery raises more questions than it answers.

Can't wait 'til next year!

It's "herald of the apocalypse," isn't it?

No one's mentioned 3's line about only 4 of the Final 5 being with the fleet. Hmm. Does that cast suspicion on the characters who were on that base ship at the time (like Helo, for example)? Is there a character we know of who is no longer with the fleet (presumed dead or just gone)? I didn't get the impression she was lying, but I guess it's possible.

It's NOT Helo! He was in the picture.

And yes, it's herald, not Hera or Harold.

FInally, the final cylon will be waiting for them on Earth to begin the new race.

Pythia wrote that the dying leader would not live to enter the new land, but clearly Laura got to stand on Earth. So this must mean that the promised land is not Earth, but something else.

Based on what can be gleaned from this last episode, the clues from the First Hybrid's prophecy, and general clues from the series, I predict the following for the last episodes:
  • Now that the humans and cylons have reached their ultimate destination and are unsure of what it means, they will split into factions.
  • They'll find the Temple of Aurora, and Kara will play a big part in discovering its purpose.
  • The promised land is actually the "place between life and death" mentioned many times before.
  • The thirteenth tribe ascended to this place after a great struggle, and are the "higher power" that have manipulated the events of the series up until to this point, with the interest of uniting humanity, and its children, once again.
  • The other cylons show up, and conflict will ensue.
  • Only those who are worthy will enter the promised land, while the others wipe themselves out.

Probably not in that order, but that's my take anyway. Can't think of what the final cylon's role will be either, or what the final four's is for that matter.

Ya it has been clear that Roslyn would not reach the new land so obviously earth isn't where they should be.
Unless of course they aren't on earth as they never clearly showed the landscape from orbit.

Maybe there's a non-nuclear part of earth that's the actual place Roslin won't reach.

And I guess this episode lends new credence to my completely random "Cally is the fifth Cylon" theory.

Yeah, I noticed that too.

None of the ruins seemed to bare any resemblance to any modern metropolis either. Specifically the ruins in the area where they had landed; they had a very old or alien look to them.

I guess we'll find out.... next year.

Also, something I noticed;

BSG has been more drawn out with gaps between seasons than any other show I can remember. And I was under the impression that it was being done halfway on purpose to keep actual airing time 'linear' with the happenings of the story .

The miniseries aired in late 2003. So we're four and a half years into the run of the show counting from there. And when you consider the fact that the show jumped a year on New Caprica, it certainly fed into the airing of the show being drawn out on purpose.

But when announcing to the fleet the arrival at Earth, Adama referred to the journey as being a 3yr one. Subtract one year of New Caprica time and that means the fleet has only experienced two years of space travel. Which essentially means that the entire series, sans New Caprica episodes, has taken place in the frame of only two years.

Doesn't click for some reason.

Maybe Adama was subtracting the same on New Caprica? (I don't remember the exact quote, but I remember it sounded short to me too.)

How can Dianna know the 5th Cylon isn't in the fleet? No way she knows what all 30,000 people look like.

Because she was looking at #5 when she said it... or at least knows #5 is one of the hostages. Not on the fleet => on the basestar. Laura, Baltar, or Helo are the only characters I can think of that are there.

Wild guess theory: the final five went to earth and are responsible for nuking it.

My only complaint with the last episode was the betrayal music which played every time one of the final four was revealed. Yeah, we get it: they were tricked!

That aside, inneresting episode. I knew the Earth was empty when their presence wasn't noticed by anyone on the ground.

I had missed it while living in Singapore. I was prepared to catch up on it somehow via netflix or something. Last night, I was channel surfing and came across the last 15 minutes or so. And they already made it to Earth. WTF!? I went back to watching Man Vs. Wild totally bummed out.

I don't think so. I think the survivors will discover more about the history of their Earth, which will lead to the final resolution of the series. I will be interested to see what the writers have in mind for the BG Earth and its history.

Something else which just occurred to me. Detectable amounts of radiation in the soil means the nuclear war/whatever was relatively recent, somewhere from 50-75 years. Assuming nuclear technology somewhat similar to ours, even the areas of the west which were the site of numerous U.S. test blasts in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s don't show high levels of radioactivity at ground level. Whether this is meaningful, or just an oversight in the part of the writers, we will have to see.

Of course I'm not an expert on this, so I could also be wrong. Any physicists out there?

Why do we assume they’re arriving on our Earth? It’s just as—maybe more—likely that it’s a parallel Earth. The way the series has been going, this wouldn’t surprise me (and is infinitely preferable to it descending into another version of the risible Galactica 1980).

Theory: Starbuck's viper detected a signal. From where? There must be something left behind.

The second half of the season will obviously try to resolve the whole earth thing, but what is it about the Cylons and their "plan"?

I noticed that there was a small montage of footage as they were preparing to jump to earth and they specifically showed...

There must be some significance in that.

I'm not. I was just pointing out that with what I know about the half lives of elements produced during a nuclear explosion the event which destroyed the city in which they landed isn't more than 30 or 40 years in their past.

As to the Final One, my guess is that it's the Cylon God, responsible for everybody's visions (Head Six, Head Baltar, Head Adama's wife, etc) and maybe even human.
