What apps would anyone recommend to clone an old WinXP drive in a Sony Vaio laptop (a non Mac using friend wants the massive 5GB hdd in it upgraded to a bigger one). feeling a bit out of my comfort zone here and a quick google search seems to highlight a lack of easy cloning apps in the ccc/superduper mold for the poor windows using world.

What the hell laptop has a 5GB hard drive running XP?!

I'd use DriveXML.

Ideally you want to have another PC to hook the old and new drive up to.
Make an image of the old drive, restore it to the new one. Make sure the new drive is formatted to NTFS and set to "active"!
