subject pretty much says it all... am i right in assuming that the rev.A G5 1.6GHz tower should be the quietest of G5 towers, simply due to less thermal output..?

You would think so, based solely on processor speed, but they might have reduced the power consumption of the chips since then.

Mine was very quiet, the fans never ever revved up under load, until I put in a Geforce 6800. Now the fans will rev up if I stress it for a while.

Mine is quiet like a church mouse. The eMachines AMD3000+ sitting next to it is a hair dryer in comparison.

Believe it or not my rev. A DP2.0GHz machine was very, very quiet.
My 2.5GHz machine in comparison is a jet airplane engine at full throttle!

was it that way before the 10.3.8 update?

My old 2.0 was veery very quiet. But then again i stopped doing updates as 10.3.5 becuase people were running into fan problems.

I suspect the NEW single 1.8 might be the quietest. It uses the 90nm 970fx which draws less than half the power of the 130nm 970 used in the 1.6 (at the same clock speed; obviously 1.6 is less than 1.8 but nowhere near 1/2). In fact the new 1.8 has one less fan than the 1.6; the 1.8 has no CPU intake fan.

Can anyone confirm for me that the new single 1.8ghz G5s uses the 970fx? I have a single processor G4 MDD and I am considering an upgrade to the single processor G5.

Note:

Before anyone trashes the single processor G5, please note that I am happy with the performance of my MDD G4. I am considering this upgrade because I want less noise, USB 2, Airport Extreme, FW800, and a Coreimage compatable video card. This upgrade would accomplish all of this in one shot.

The cost will not be too much when you consider that I qualify for the goverment employee discount and will also recoup some money from the sale of my MDD.
