I want to put a 512MB RAM chip if possible in my 300MHz iBook Tangerine....has anyone tried this before? Do I have to be careful of differnet vendors or specifications?

When the tangerine came out, there were no 512 MB low profile SO-DIMMs, so they are not technically supported by Apple. It may or may not work.

well from what i have heard, the 512MB dimms do not work in the original ibooks. apparently even the 256MB dimms did not until the last firmware update came out. i have a 256 in mine now, to make 280, so thats all that i am sure that works.

i am yet to have confirmation from anyone who has in fact tried to use a 512MB dimm that it actually does not work, nor have i heard of anyone who had it working. so i am pretty sure it does not work.

I put a 512M SODIMM in my wife's Rev B 300mhz iBook and it's been running fine for almost a year - I overclocked it to 400 mhz at the same time just to make things interesting...

It has to be low profile (1.25") AND the thin ones like the new iBooks and Ti's take...the low profile thick ones like for the Wall Street and Lombard definitely won't fit...

It might work, but why would you need that much RAM? 384 MB seems like plenty to me.

In OSX you can easily exceed 384 MB. I run around 360 MB under normal use, but at times I am using over 500MB (my iBook has 640MB).

Well, I run Jaguar and I figured the more RAM the better. My fiance has an old iMac and I need to buy a little extra RAM for her, and 512MB chips are farily reasonably priced.

Just to let everyone know, I bought a 512MB PC100 chip from Coast to Caost memory for $88, and I got it today. It installed just fine in my iBook. I wasn't too concerned. Macs tend to be very friendly to upgrades. I'm happily running 576MB RAM now.

One Note: This is a Rev.B iBook, so it came with 64MB built-in and a 6GB HD instead of the original 3GB.

I have to say though; I didn't notice a substantial difference in boot time, maybe a second or two faster. Large apps: I have Flash & Dreamweaver loaded; did launch noticably quicker, and are more responsive now. I don't see the little beachball anymore expect for when the system first starts up.

If you have the cash, I'd say go for it. I only wish I got a PC133 since I'm planning on getting a Titanium sometime over the next six to eight months, but oh well.

Thanks everyone for your responses!

Just to confirm, MDiddy. The part you got from Coast to Coast was:

LG1064U/512/K3VLP 512MB PC100 144 PIN SO DIMM

Is that right? The price now looks to be $93. It's listed under Laptop SODIMMs, for anyone who goes looking for it.

Data Memory Systems has this:

512MB PC100 iBook 500/600 ONLY (STACKED CHIP VERSION)

For $85, but I don't know if that stacked chip version will work in my Key Lime. Anyone know?
