Are there any cheap, free programs for OS X that will take the words from a song and them save the instrumental version as an MP3?

Impossible I am afraid. The tracks get 'flattened' when the CD is produced, meaning all the tracks get mixed together. There is no way you can extract just the vocal track.

There are filters available that try and achieve what you're after but I've yet to come across one that works properly.

Don't think so !

Can try shareware Melody Assistant:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/2826

Or QMidi:
http://www.geocities.com/mixage/

But they won't really
do what your asking.

Fancy a little late
night karaoke?

Hmmm.....there are a couple programs that you can do a "karaoke" mode in that takes out some of the vocals, but I'm not sure how much you want stripped out.

Search for "Audio Hijack" if you're interested...

What is the site that picture is from? I've been to it before, and it's been about 6-months. I recall it's really funny, but I can't remember the name of it for the life of me.

SoundJam had a kareoke mode that did what you ask, you could try googling, someone is bound to have a copy online somewhere.

Its possible to do it with some clever filtering and EQ'ing but it can be complicated.
