I've got an ElGato EyeTV 500 (HDTV version) which I bought a while ago. It's practically new, was stored in the box until I could get around to experimenting with reception. I concluded that I can't get good reception in my area except with a rooftop antenna, and I don't want to bother with that. I can't return it now, so I'm hoping to sell it, asking $215 shipped.

I don't see that they're giving the 2.0 software with the refurbs, but I guess it's a safe assumption. I guess I'll revise the price--$150 delivered.

These have been tested and work perfectly, I'm really hoping people are willing to take me up on this.

My refurb eyetv 500 shipped with EyeTV 2. But the 500 only recieves digital broadcasts, not analog. There's often SD content put out on the HD channels, but they're still digital broadcasts.

Yeah, that's correct. It only has a digital tuner, so you won't get SD analog channels. You will be able to get SD and/or HD digitally depending on how the broadcaster broadcasts. Thanks for clearing that up.

I know this can be confusing so hopefully this will help.
It best to think of it as ATSC vs NTSC instead of Digital vs Analog.
ATSC = Digital broadcast resolutions at 1080i/p, 720p, 480i/p. This is also called HDTV.
NTSC = Analog broadcast resolutions at 480i. This is also called SD. (Incorrectly?)

Elgato promises a universal version... someday. Translated is functional, but it halves the video and doubles it up for full screen on my iMac DC. The trick is to use a intel build of VLC to watch, but it's not nearly as good for skipping commercials.

But aren't antenna signals low quality? At with analog you get a semi-fuzzy picture with ok sound and good performance.

But if it's digital doesn't that mean it gets choppy and messed up since it needs all the digital packets to work right?

The signal tends to drop out hard so the picture and sound will freeze or black out if the signal gets weak or blocked--that's the problem I had trying to use an indoor antenna. In my area, the towers are a little far away, so I'd need a rooftop antenna to get consistent picture and sound.

Antenna signals aren't low quality by definition, but they easily CAN be. Digital is great when it's all there, but unusable in low signal strength, because as you said, it just goes away or shows big blocks of funny colors instead of being fuzzy or noisy. Which is why I have an antenna on my roof, even though I live 5 miles from the broadcast towers. I get the best possible digital and analog OTA signals possible.
