Its not complicated, he is saying that some women lie about being raped. More than likely he is implying that many who get raped are asking for it or deserve it but I suppose I shouldn't put words in his mouth.

What he is definitely implying is that if you get pregnant from being raped, then it wasn't a legitimate rape and you somehow wanted it to happen. What a scumbag.

It amazes me that any women at all vote for guys like this or political parties that tolerate them. Feminism has a long way to go in the US it seems.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

One would have hoped, but then he had to go and win his party's nomination.

Unless he rolls over in the next few days, which would be a pretty big deal in and of itself, he's national news for the next two months.

Rolls over? He didn't win his party's nomination from that statement and the Republican party is in fact rolling him over. To be clear, a good thing.

Sen. McCaskill's campaign was hoping that Rep. Akin would win the GOP nomination because he's known to be an extreme conservative who would eventually say something that would alienate swing voters. And true to form he did. The GOP is looking to throw him under the bus because winning the MO Senate seat is critical to winning back control of the Senate. So far Akin is resisting heavy pressure to drop out of the race. The McCaskill campaign is naturally hoping he continues to do so. There's a 5 PM deadline tomorrow to withdraw without penalty. We'll see how it goes.

My apologies for not being more clear.

I'm not arguing he got the nomination for that statement (or similar statements).

Dakar's claim is Akin only rates an entry in the batshit thread. My counter-claim is as the nominee, he's raised himself above the level of that thread, which for the most part contains the corpses of people smacked down during the nomination process. It's still far more likely Akin could become a senator than it ever was Bachmann could become president (for example). Once you have an actual shot at an office, I think it stops being "ha ha, funny".

I'm honestly a little surprised at the amount of heat he's brought down from other Republicans. I was expecting the plan to be "circle the wagons".

Come on Todd Akin. Just because most Republicans believe that doesn't mean you have to say it out load for the public to hear.

It is a common belief among Republicans that was well kept a secret, but you just have to ruin it by blurting it out.

Paul Ryan and Todd Akin partnered on the personalhood bill outlawing abortion.

I disagree with the assertion that Akin is being "thrown under the bus" by his Republican counterparts. It was a stupid thing to say, worded as stupidly as possible, and couldn't have been timed more stupidly. This is not something you throw under the bus, it's something you carpet-bomb.

Pro-lifers understand that the reason Roe V Wade is the law of the land, enabling nearly one million abortions every year, is the arguments of rape, incest, and health of the mother. While combined they comprise approximately 1% of all abortions performed, they are powerful arguments. Republicans desperately want to have counter-arguments and while the only one at their disposal could be the rate of repeat abortions and number of choices made for nothing more than "I didn't want a baby", they generally can't argue against rape, incest, and health of mother. They want to, but they can't. Akin is one of a few who want so desperately to end the practice of abortion that they'll lap up any loony supposition they can find to counter the arguments of rape, incest, and health of mother. Loony suppositions are loony suppositions. If you cite them in public, differentiating "legitimate rape" from "illegitimate rape"; you're going to be thrown in the loony-bin of has-been politicians. This is nothing new and the result is always the same.

Do the right thing, Akin. buh-bye

VP Joe Burdon had been blathering idiotic nonsense for decades but thats not 'news' according to the MSM.

Yes, ANY DIVERSION from Owe-bama's hideous job as POTUS will be exploited to the max.

Forget the Unemployment at a real 14%,
Housing still tanking,
GM is even tanking and may need another Union gift...er...bailout/stimulus.

Lets ignore Owe-bamas "You didn't build this" and his sleazy attacks (called the "New lie everyday campaign of hate")

Where ARE THOSE college transcripts?

People say stupid things all the time. Lets look at the rest of what they say.

WHY would anyone feel safe knowing if anything happened to Owe-bama, Joe the idiot would be POTUS.

The Sen. McCaskill's re-election campaign must be thrilled right about now. Todd Akin apparently doesn't know or simply doesn't care about how much of a political hot potato he's become.

Rep. Todd Akin said today he will remain in the Missouri Senate race.

The Missouri Republican just announced his decision on Mike Huckabee's radio show.

"I said one word in one sentence on one day, and everything changed," Akin said today. "I believe the defense of the unborn and a deep respect for life…they are not things to run away from."

Akin, a six-term House member, ignited a controversy with comments Sunday saying pregnancy could be prevented in the case of "legitimate rape" because "the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has been trying to get him to withdraw from the race against Democrat Claire McCaskill. His comments have been widely rebuked, including by GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.

Republicans have high hopes of defeating McCaskill in their bid to claim four seats and control power in the Senate.
Akin announces he'll stay in Missouri Senate race - USAToday.com

If somebody opposes abortion even in cases of rape or incest ... I can at least respect the ideological consistency of that position. But it seems to me that if you want to be a US Senator you ought to at least be somewhat familiar with Human Anatomy 101 and simple common sense. I'm just saying ....

Salon: Akin is only guilty of saying out loud what many Republican leaders think.

"In the new, extremist Republican Party, Akin is not an aberration. He is merely the latest canary in a coal mine of crazy."

No, that's not the reason RvW is the law of the land. Not even fncking close. "Roe" was none of those three things.

I love the fact that Ryan is now inexorably linked to Akin, strangling the "Rmoney/Ayn Ryan" ticket with a heavy albatross.

Yes, Ayn Ryan is my new favourite nickname for Paul Ryan, so get used to it. By the way, all the letters of "Mitt Romney Paul Ryan" can be rearranged to "my ultimate Ayn Rand porn." Which is fncking hilarious.

Not even fncking close, but by all means -- keep representin'.

Read the history of the decision and the laws concerning legal vs illegal abortions across the country prior to the judgement of the Supreme Court and how a case even finds its way into the highest court in the Country... yeah... very much linked to the argument of rape. Again, how you make such rigid conclusions on issues with so little factual information at your disposal is friggin' amazing. You suck at American politics.

Akin is pretty representative of the general tendencies within the Republican party, though, isn't he?

And if a return to 1950s social values, as signed off in the Republican program on Tuesday, isn't extremist in the year 2012, what is?

Liberals are in a make believe world. Do you ACTUALLY THINK THEY CAN READ MINDS? They sure spend a lot of time attaching labels to everyone. Why is that? They can't judge for themselves, or is it they just suck at judgement due to some perception issues? Why do liberals see the world as a soap opera plot? Salon is a waste of bandwidth.

The GOP platform advocates a complete ban on all abortion ... even in the cases of rape or incest. This is nothing new because it's been included as a plank in the GOP platform in both the 2004 and 2008 conventions. And it just recently was included again as part of the 2012 platform. The thing is the GOP tosses it in there as a bone to its evangelical base to get their support ... but it generally prefers not to draw too much attention to it because it's a view that's out of the mainstream of the overall electorate. What Rep. Akin has done is put the thinking of many far-right conservatives center stage. This guy is NOT out of step with the far right wing of the GOP by any measure. Nor is Romney above alliances with so-called doctors who allow their anti-abortion ideology to fly in the face of biology and simple common sense.

Although Mitt Romney has denounced Rep. Todd Akin’s remarks about “legitimate rape” victims rarely getting pregnant, the controversial doctor behind Akin’s debunked claim was an “important surrogate” for the GOP hopeful during his last presidential bid.
As several outlets reported Tuesday, Romney in 2007 touted the endorsement from Dr. John “Jack” Willke, a prominent and controversial anti-abortion physician often referred to as “the father of the antiabortion movement.”

Today, Dr. John Willke, a founder of the Pro Life Movement, endorsed Governor Mitt Romney and his campaign for our nation’s highest office,” reads a Romney campaign press release from October 2007. “Dr. Willke is a leading voice within the pro-life community and will be an important surrogate for Governor Romney’s pro-life and pro-family agenda.”

In that release, Romney is quoted as saying, “I am proud to have the support of a man who has meant so much to the pro-life movement in our country. He knows how important it is to have someone in Washington who will actively promote pro-life policies.”
In “Why Can’t We Love Them Both: Questions and Answers About Abortion,” a 1971 book Willke wrote with his wife, they claim that the trauma associated with “assault rape” makes a woman’s body less habitable and thus lessens the possibility of pregnancy, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Facing widespread calls from GOP heavyweights for him to drop out of the congressional race, Akin on Tuesday released a letter he received from Willke stating “the pro-life movement and I unequivocally stand with Rep. Akin.”

Romney on Tuesday asked Akin to drop his bid to unseat Sen. Claire McCaskill.

Who holds such an "extremist" view? Just the nominee for VP.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politi...152_story.html

“Well, you know, look. I’m proud of my record,” Ryan said to reporters aboard his plane en route to Raleigh, N.C., when asked about differences between he and Romney regarding abortion.

Romney supports abortion exceptions in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life is endangered; Ryan does not.

“Mitt Romney’s going to be the president,” Ryan said. “The president sets the policy. His policy is exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother. I’m comfortable with it because it’s a good step in the right direction. I’ll leave it at that.”
But as OAW points out, it's been part of the GOP platform since 2004.

Since when is preserve the species in conflict with biology and simple common sense? You guys are slobbering all over yourselves here. Akin does not define anything more than another inept representative. A plurality of Americans consider themselves pro-life and I maintain there wouldn't be sanity at all if it weren't for their voice. There is absolutely nothing "extremist" about defining a threshold for human life and maintaining that ground. Yes, it's absolutely deplorable that we even have to consider something as horrific as rape, but that doesn't mean a caretaker is "extremist" by focusing on the one in most peril. Honestly, this is the most cynical and divisive sh!t I've read in a long time.

I'm tellin' you guys, the Dems are going to overplay the absolute bat-crap out of this. There are far too many women with a staunch pro-life view for this "attack on women!" narrative to sink. You're welcome to try of course and you've got some good bait to be certain -- do well with it. Akin is still up 1% over McCaskill so if she does have the political savvy to pull this out, let's hope for the good folks of Missouri she's not into bloodletting snow seal pups.

What do you mean by "general tendencies"? Greater than 30% of Democrats self-identify as pro-life. The ones able to win elections likely did a much more effective job of defending their position, I'll grant you that.

And if a return to 1950s social values, as signed off in the Republican program on Tuesday, isn't extremist in the year 2012, what is?
I'm a registered Republican and I never received the memo on this alleged return to 1950's social values. Perhaps it's in the Jim Crow subfolder of my (D) inbox.

Will you forgive me for sharing that the first thought I had was you running through the streets of Copenhagen, grabbing people off the street and yelling "don't you see? Your system is insane! Insane I tell you!"

It's amazing how the imagination runs wild with so little context.

Oh... you're being a stick-in-the-mud.

I give you leave to imagine me running through the streets of Copenhagen, yanking infants from their prams and tossing them in a meat-grinder. All to the cheers of beleaguered, socialist, former parents.

Eesh, I'm being a stick in the mud? I don't know if I should laugh or step slowly away from this thread. Should I know socialism hates babies?

Hates babies?

If they hated babies, what would they eat?

Now I imagine you grabbing some Dane, yelling "where are the pot brownies? WHERE ARE THE POT BROWNIES?"

They look a little embarrassed, shrug their shoulders, and offer you an infant burger.

When common sense isn't quite as simple as you make it out to be.

For one, survival of the species has dangerously Darwinist undertones, so you should be careful, lest you be identified as agreeing with reality.

For another, survival of the species benefits from the well-being of the population, and not so much from raw numbers.
Forcing rape victims to have the children gives rape as a crime a HUGE boost in power. This is totally awesome for rapists, as it not only destroys the ego of the victim, but forces them to financially and socially deal with the consequences every day.
I'm sure this counts as "preservation of the species", just like war rape and a constitutional ban on gay marriage.

Really? Why should common sense be more complicated?

For one, survival of the species has dangerously Darwinist undertones, so you should be careful, lest you be identified as agreeing with reality.
Now you're just being argumentative.

For another, survival of the species benefits from the well-being of the population, and not so much from raw numbers.
Careful, is this the; abortion is good genocide defense?

I've already openly admitted there is no good counter to the rape argument. Rape and incest comprise approximately 1% of the more than one million abortions every year in the US. There is absolutely nothing "extremist" about defining a threshold for human life and maintaining that ground. If you believe in protecting human life, you're in the uncomfortable position of weighing human life against all the criminal horrors of human nature up to homicide; where common sense may be a little more complicated than you give it credit. It may not be a winning argument, but again -- there's certainly nothing extremist about it.

I'm sure this counts as "preservation of the species", just like war rape and a constitutional ban on gay marriage.
Why are you going all cyber-bully on me here? I thought DOMA was bad law particularly because it was implemented at the Federal level. I don't know what war rape is, but it indeed sounds horrific.
