Yesterday Tapbots unleashed the next major version of its popular Twitter client,
Tweetbot, for the iPhone. However, to the displeasure of many, this iOS 7 optimized update was released as a new app and not as a free update for existing customers. Anyone looking to take advantage of the advancements found in the update will need to pay the full entry fee of $3.
Tweetbot 3 retains all of the functionality of previous releases, but has been redesigned from the ground up to run on iOS 7. The app's "heavy" design has been replaced with a much simpler interface that is more content focused. Buttons and square avatars have been done away with and replaced by lighter icons and circular photos, and iOS 7s new physics system has allowed the developers to integrate several new animations. Audio cues have also been reworked and tweets will abide by Apple's system-wide font-sizing controls.
Across the bottom of the app are five navigation controls, this includes Timeline, Replies, Direct Messages, and two customizable controls that can be swapped between six different options. From this main view the only other noticeable controls are the compose and account buttons placed in the top right and left corners respectively. All other controls are accessed by performing various gestures. For example, tapping on a tweet brings up a quick-action pain, while tapping and holding will provide further actions.
Whether or not Tweetbot is worth the $3 asking price will vary from user to user, however, the app makes a strong case for the cost. Tweetbot includes a number of features not found in the default Twitter client, such as list and multiple account support, and does so while maintaining a simple and easy-to-use interface.
