Out now at the Iconfactory...
As discussed in this thread, I've granted monkeybrain's request and included some Space:1999 icons from the set I have underway. I didn't want to announce it in Zyote's 2001 thread, but I wanted to let interested folks know about it...
As it stands now, I guess I am 2 years behind Zyote!

Cheers Dave! Very nice work, never even considered those moonbase badges. Love that martian saucer as well.

I find this amusingly ironic, since I designed the icon for Extensis Suitcase...

Don't do it, demo! Hey, look - it's just a nearly-featureless white rectangle on a nearly featureless metal stand. I should think that anyone that draws this thing face-on is going to come up with approximately the same icon. My version isn't appreciably different from or better than anyone else's. I just did it to... well, to get it out of the way. It was sort of obligatory. I was mostly concerned with having a nice 32x32 size for toolbar/sidebar usage. I'm much more pleased with the Glider! icon...
As for the folder, glad you like it. I made it quite ways back, but I never fell in love with it. It was an experiment, rendering Apple's folder at the angle I used for the Rev. 2 folders. I have a lot of folder designs that I play with and never use, many of which use this angle. I have some old brushed-metal folders (including some EVA ones) at this same angle, but I never made drop states. The only perceptible theme for this set was "lost and found", and this is one that falls under that. Feel free to badge it up anyway you like for your own use, though...

Nice work Dave, but why did you include such a crappy video card on your iMac?
Keep up the good work. And demo, what about rotating your slightly to give it some perspective? I would think that your icons would handle a slight rotation better as they appear a little flatter from the front. That would make them stand out again from some of the face-on shots.

Great, great set of icons. You've set a high watermark, even for yourself.
One thing that impresses me the most is one tiny detail that most overlook - an open/drop state for the folder!
Hardly anyone takes the time to do this and it is much appreciated. Usually I'm stuck with my fair skills at Photoshop to make a drop state, but I know it would've looked better had the original artist done it. So thanks!

To dislike Sinatra is a sign of highly questionable taste. To dislike the Beatles is a serious character flaw.

Thanks! Sometimes, opne/drop states can be a pain, so I understand why some people don't do it... I don't do it all the time, actually...
Speaking of tiny details, remember that I mentioned that the Space:1999 icons in WOA 5 are really leaked from an upcoming set? Well, here's another peak at some work in progress - an Eagle/launch pad icon...

Well, I won't detail my exact techniques, but I will say that I work with a combination of Freehand and Photoshop. In Freehand, I have a custom-built, adjustable perspective grid (based on what I call the "chess angle" - from Apple's Chess icon). This file lets me quickly work out an object in 3D at the right perspective. The Eagle is actually not as complex to create as it looks, if you think about the fact that it's built up of a lot of repeated shapes and objects - pieces I could largely recycle from the first Eagle icon I made. Much of the detail and texture is added in Photoshop. I make a lot of layers...
Reference? My hard drive is packed to the limit with reference... I am a packrat in that regard...

Is freehand easier to use than illustrator? Are the tools similar, or would I need to learn it from scratch? Thanks for the help.

Well, that's probably entirely subjective. I've been using Freehand since about version 4, and it's just second nature to me now - I've always found it fairly simple and intuitive to use. Illustrator seems more powerful and has the distinct advantage of being tightly integrated with Photoshop, but despite several attempts, I've never been able to wrap my mind around the way the app works - especially at the "drawing" level. For better or worse, I guess I have too many reflexes built up in Freehand.
