Here is what Im trying to do:

I want to buy a new PS3 or Blu-Ray player and hook it to my 24" Dell monitor. The problem is with the sound since I do not have a reciever. I want to be able to take the optical sound from the blu-ray or PS3 and put it into the Input on my new MacBook Pro and let the sound run through my laptop and comeout my computer speakers.

Has anyone ever done this?

How would it work? Will OS X just let the sound pass right through or what?

This is just a crazy idea of how to set this up and I really have no clue if it will work with the sound going through my laptop.

I'd just buy a cheap sound card with optical input for the desktop; it just sounds like there is too much hassle...
