Despite being pricy, they seem to sell pretty well at the prices they are at. (and why drop the 30? They can't make enough anyway at $3299)
I would like them to repackage the 17" in the new AL casing and release it at like $499. Still more expensive than most others, but it would make a lot of people take interest, mac and PC users alike.

I doubt they'd do it tomorrow as MWSF is right around the corner. However, I understand that there is a relative glut of LCD panels worldwide right now and prices have dropped. $1299 is an awfully high "starting point" to own an ACD given that non-Apple 20" LCDs can be had sub-$700 and decent brands can be had for around $800. Apple almost always charges a premium ... but a 25-30% premium for the 20" @ $1k sound a little less out of line than the current $1.3k.
Who knows .. hope its true thought

I am not in any way saying that will happen, but it would make sense, especially if this "headless imac/emac" thing is a reality - you can bet they'd want to have an "inexpensive" (in Apple's eyes anyway) monitor to sell along with it. But if they do make a new 17" - perhaps it will not be aluminum but more in the consumer white colour like iBooks and iMacs and the rumoured headless....

Doing so now, might make it obvious that they intend to create a headless. When is MW?

On the UK store, every major Apple product has seen a price drop except the eMac.
Take this to mean what you will

Good for us !!!
MW is next Tuesday. Would be nice if they added a 17" widescreen to the lineup then. $499 sounds right. Maybe save $50 or $100 if bought in tandem with a new mac.

Probably indicative of the stong euro and incredibly weak $ right now. Could be good times ahead for the EU with regards to Apple product pricing.

No not iPods, sorry meant expensive items such as computers.
I meant my previous comment to imply that the eMac will see a speed bump or disappear altogether. [btw, the UK doesn't use the Euro yet]

Well Krusty, given that the 20" is still not that competitively priced at $999, I don't think a 17" widescreen would be as cheap as $499. I'm thinking $699. Even though it's a totally outrageous price for a 17" LCD, Apple won't hesitate to charge that much for them, and many people won't hesitate to buy them at that price just for their styling.

That's more like it
[There is some talk of us using both, as quite a lot of shops do this anyway now]

Wasn't the old 17" already dropped to $699 just before its discontinuation ?? I can't imagine that they'd intro a new 17" at that same price point. $499 would still be WAAAYYYY out of line for 17" LCDs these days (in other words, that price seems suitably more expensive in typical Apple fashion)
