Specs are pretty predictable... Cantiga chipset and a 100-200Mhz clock rate bump.
MacRumors posted a supposed spy shot of a new case design recently.

2.8 GHz Penryn T9600 with 6 MB L2 cache. Possibly later on quad QX9500 2.53 GHz (since Intel claims they will get its TDP down to the same as the current MBP Penryns) as BTO option. Mainly just so Phil Schiller gets to jump around about the "first" quad-core notebook. Cantiga chipset with it's 1066 MHz FSB and support for 8 GB DDR3 RAM. New GPU. Bigger disks. No BR. MultiTouch trackpad. I'm not expecting dramatic case changes.

Too late for Schill to shill that line. There have been quad-core notebooks since last year even if they use desktop chips. They also have dual SLI and dual hard drives and Blu-ray.
Apple would have to tout a very very unique and new feature to play the 'we're first' card again. More likely it will have something to do with the touchpad or screen if that happens.

That's why I used quotes for "first".
The way I know Phil and his people they will narrow it down with some marketing spin like "first truly portable quad-core notebook" or "first quad-core notebook under 6 lbs." or even better "first quad-core notebook with 3 hrs battery lifetime". I'm sure their marketing department will find something to be first in. And in all fairness, a MBP with a QX9300 would be quite something else than one of those 10 lb desktop CPU monsters that aren't really notebooks.
Regardless, if Intel actually comes through and launches QX9300 at 2.53 GHz with 35 W TDP that would indeed be quite something. Certainly not cost-effective for most MBP buyers, but a BTO option could make sense (marketing and margins). And no doubt eventually quad-cores will become common in notebooks. Even in really portable notebooks with decent battery life.

Yes. Nothing dramatic.
And of course they could well turn out to be fakes. Real case leaks are getting rare these days.

If you are a student, teacher, or university faculty you can buy through Apple's EDU store. You can easily get up to 20% discounts that way.
After that, refurbs are an excellent choice.
Some Apple dealers sell demo units. A friend got his 17" MBP that way. The unit had been unboxed and used for a couple of Aperture demo sessions. It had been used in total for about 8 hours and looked like new. The dealer sold it to him for a third off the regular price.
And finally you can always look at used Macs. Just make sure you get to see and try out stuff before you buy it. Also make sure you get papers with serial numbers, receipts, etc.

Well certainly never on their own. They are good in copying rumors first published by other sites though.

I know there is no way of knowing for sure, but does anyone have any speculation of when we might see new MBPs?

Anytime now. Intel launched Calistoga Cantiga for dedicated GPUs together with the Montevina refresh Penryns two days ago. In principle Apple could update the MBP anytime now. I'm expecting the update to arrive no later than Aug.

Hopefully apple comes out with a quad core macbook pro under 14 inches. Otherwise I'll be grabbing one from HP and putting linux on it.

Not going to happen in Apple world.
Penryn XE quad-core QX9300 will arrive in August.

nVidia announced the high-end of the 9000 series mobile GPUs (9700 and 9800)... pretty nice lineup, although based on the past couple MBPs Apple will probably go for the midrange (perhaps 9650M GS).

The 9800 is geared towards desktop replacements. And with Apple's mobile graphics record we aren't going to see it on the MBP anytime soon.

You are right. History appears to support your statement. As Electronista puts it the 9800 line is suited"...to desktop replacement portables and very compact desktops..." It would be nice if Apple would take this into serious consideration for the next MBP, at least, for a change ... with a minimum of 512 mb VRAM, to beef up its pro designation.
