I thought I remember there being a couple other VMware server admins around here, so this might be interesting to them. VMware is going to migrate GSX server to a free product called VMware server. I'm already running ESX for all our critical production level virtual servers, but this will be great for deploying development and lower utilization servers without having to shell out the bucks for GSX.

I saw that too. I can't believe they're giving that away... I'll be downloading both the windows and the linux versions. I can make some seriuous $$$ off that consolidation my web servers.

That way, when one server goes down, they all go down.

Gotta have redundancy. VirtualCenter helps, too

Actually when I have a problem it's an application that crashes a server... this way I can jsut restart the VM instead of having to reboot the entire system. It actually works out better.

I don't know too much about VMware, but by making this server free isn't EMC giving one of its most important products? If so, I now realize why EMC broke its trading range and has been heading downward in the last month.

VMware Server is replacing GSX, which wasn't their high end solution. GSX is pretty much glorified VMware Workstation. ESX is their high end bare metal virtualization server.
I think it's good for them, if it helps divert attention away from Xen. Not that Xen is bad, but people looking for low cost solutions didn't have many choices from VMware. Giving away VMware Server will help them get a following among the people who might otherwise not have looked at VMware. It'll also build up a bigger community for premade virtual machines, which are really fast and easy ways to try software out.

Update: In May, M$ also made their Virtual Server 2005 R2, Enterprise Edition free for download. If you've got a spare PC running XP or the like with sufficient CPU/RAM, you can easily create a dev server environment.

Unless MS buys out VMWare, there is no way they are ever going to beat them.
AKA : "The Citrix Effect"
ESX 3 is just a gob-smacking great suite of products.
And, no, I don't work for them but, I am getting my certification with them soon!
