What does this mean?

"Windows File Sharing now generates only one process, avoiding an issue that could cause a Mac OS X computer to become unresponsive if it won a master browser election."

Sounds kinda like "...avoiding an issue that could cause a government to become unresponsive if a certain candidate won the general election."

I have no clue what that means. It's probably some strange Microsoft terminology, kinda like the "forest" terminology for Active Directory...

Holy bleedin' crap, my new Intel mini (my work Mac) is running like a whole new machine after the update. I was having all kinds of processor use spikes, and now I'm running smooth as silk and FAST (for a mini).

Why just comcast? Could it be that there were issues with high speed internet
in general but due to the prevalance of Comcast use they were mentioned?

Curiouser and curiouser. I knew something was up when my apps all got
updates last night but I saw nothing this morning.

Be nice now.
I came to the forum to let you all know that the update was out and Lateralus beat me to it.

So far everything is working well on the 20 and the 24.

The PPC version is older so the de-bug code has been removed.

Sorry, somebody had to say it.

I just installed the update on my Macbook and after restarting i got nothing but verticle coloured bars and couldn't start the computer. I called applecare and got it sorted out but it cost me 300$ because I hadn't purchased applecare (until today).

So if this happens to you:

Turn computer off
Turn computer on again holding down option, apple, p and r keys
Hold until you hear three chimes
The computer should start up, go to display preferences and change the resolution to anything, then change back to the original one.

Presto.

I reported a bunch of bugs in 10.4.7 that were Intel-only. Hopefully this means they may have fixed them - I need to get ahold of someone with an Intel Mac to test.

It's too little, too late, but I'd suggesting posting on the forum next time before spending $300.

About the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update (delta)
I prefer to actually verify that it's fixed first-hand, because the bugs I am referring to are rather important to some of my programs.

I thought this was supposed to be the update with threaded OpenGL. Did that get scrapped or did they just not mention it?

I installed it and it was like getting "teh snappy" back on my MBP . It used to take upwards of four or five bounces to launch itunes or iPhoto now it only takes one for almost any app . I don't know why that was especially considering I repaired permissions etc but it works well now

No problems so far although it took about 3 minutes to restart after installing and get me back to the desktop. After that boot times were normal

There's a new feature in 10.4.8 - take a look at the Mouse preferences and see the new way to initiate Zooming.

When on a network, different computers have to basically negotiate for which one will do what at what time. I think this is talking about making WFS run only one process because there would be a problem if one WFS process "won the election" while another one was trying to browse the network shares. By using only one process, if it wins, there's no conflict on the Mac and thus no other processes to cause the Mac to hang. Does that make sense?

That's a MS thing though? It's not how AppleTalk and TCP/IP work (the first is client/client, the latter is client/overseer). I'm mixing protocols with application layer stuff now, but I just want to clarify that you don't -have- to do a bad network implementation of anything.

10.4.8 seems to fix (at least on my Mac Pro) the image corruption issues when PowerPoint 2004 is running a show on a 30" display (those who've seen this "split screen" artifact will know what I'm talking about).

OmniWeb 5.5 seems more crashy than before. Was very stable on 10.4.7, but I've had three crashes in the last hour since installing 10.4.8 (Combo-Intel).

I think it's more about how Windows shares than anything else. So that's neither network protocol nor transport layer, but how the OS deals with requests at that end.

And as for details, I'm fresh out of them. It was a long time ago that I last dealt with Windows guts on a regular basis.
