Does anyone have any suggestions for sites to research a family history? It would be great if there were decent free ones, but as always, "You get what you pay for".

Mormons. Yes. Those folks can trace you back to Adam.

Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.

www.ancestry.com
It costs, but you can actually download copies of census reports, war registrations, etc. Another benefit is that if there is someone in your tree who matches up with someone in someone else's tree you can use their tree to fill in yours. Very handy indeed.
I was able to trace back my Mother's maternal side to one of the men who came over on the Mayflower.

That doesn't matter; they believe in you.

Yeah, I am not cool with paying between $13 and $20 a month. I would like to know, but that is just too much.

FamilySearch.org - Family History and Genealogy Records is a good start. That is the Mormon site and their info is usually pretty good due to their beliefs. After that, you can go to RootsWeb.com Home Page and probably get more info. Now the trouble is that for a lot of the info from those sites, you don't get to see the proof. But once you have a good solid tree, you can then subscribe to a month or 2 of Ancestry and there you can download scans of census info, military draft registrations, obits, immigration docs, and all kinds of real documentation. It's worth a month subscription once you have a good grasp on who you need to focus on. Be cautious with adding other trees to your tree. You don't know how good THEIR info is.
