I found this helpful little tip.

If you would like Safari to save pdf files directly to the desktop instead of to a browser window, quit Safari, open up your Terminal program and type this in:

defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool YES

hit enter and then close your Terminal window.

While it is indeed a helpful tip, I would much rather have PDF files appear in Safari and I can chose to save the ones I want.

How do you turn it back off, change YES to NO

Note: This is for Safari's built-in PDF viewer only.

This option within Adobe Acrobat Reader can simply be toggled off and on within the programs preferences.
