Personally, I'd rather use an option to prevent bumping of threads older than 6 months, then fold all the archives back into their respective forums. It would simplify searching.
However, I have never gotten an answer if vBB supports setting a cut-off date for thread bumps.

Just lock the darn threads.
I guess you would need some tool to help you with mass-locknation
