This name-changing game has run out of control.
One idea is if there was at one time a year that people could request a name change without losing post count. If the reason was valid, then the name would changed by a mod/admin. If not, no change.
It would give a little back to the posters, maybe create a little goodwill and also maybe stymie the rash of people changing names every other post (as if that changed their persona somehow).

I don't think you can stop this and to be honest I don't care.
If your not allowed to change your nik, then people will just create new profiles. Personally I find it a little childish to do it mid thread and go back and forth but then this board can be rife with childish behavior so its just par for the course.

Randman,
Can you explain why it bothers you that people change names?

I wanted to come here and register the name Randman. But I saw it was taken.
And since then I have been on a quest to find one just as cool.

I think I offered up an acceptable explination when I changed my nickname.
I think those who post under various names such as when SWF does it are simply attention whores. As long as they follow a theme It's acceptable though.
Those that change their nickname and make no announcements or it isn't obvious have issues if you ask me (which you probably aren't).
And then we have those who are forced to change their nickname because their old one is banned and they aren't given it back by the mods. Can't they take a hint68?

I dunno. I see your post and I still think: Oh, that's kilbey. Same with Zimphire, et al.
At least Rickeyfan and SWG keep the same theme going.

I have no problem with that. That's what I meant when it's an obvious nickname change. My case, whey I wanted a new nick, I went through a change in life and decided the "Kilbey" moniker just didn't fit.
It's the ones who are trying to be sly or subtle who have issues. Don't you agree that's "logical"?

Yeah, that's fair.
I still wish the mods had taken up my suggestion that once a year, people could request a name change without losing post counts.
Say, one mod/admin creates a thread on Jan 1 (PM's would fill up too quickly though there could be a gmail account just for this) and people make their requests and the reasons to do so, Then on Jan 31, the admins/mod make the changes for the requests deemed appropriate and deserving and that's that.
You'd have a little organization and giving back to some of the people who help make this forum what it is.

How about taking a $ 5 registration fee that you get back after a probation period and like 20 posts ?

Make it $9.95 and 20 posts. Most spammers won't get past the $15, but if they do, they aren't going past 20 posts. No way. Same goes for obvious trolls. Then you don't refund their money and make them pay again to get back on...

Well, posting 14 posts a day and some does not make you an attention whore I suppose?

No.
It just means I have a lot of free time at work.
I also don't post intentionally inflammatory posts to draw attention to myself. Unlike others on here.

What I think is the mods should crack down on people posting from multiple addresses. Some are obvious. like *68, but we all know this so it is not so bad. What I hate is people hiding behind a new moniker.
And yes my name has been changed, though I like to think of it as corrected. I never wanted to be _?_ but names had to be at least three letters in length and Ω came out as ? when I registered. Did have a funny run in with Philzilla when I first registered who thought I was a joke account (ps Your English team is a bunch of granddads! )

Inflammatory posts are quite relative; usually, the inflammability is related to the level of disagreement. I guess you are not so good at discussion and prefer to dwell in agreements with your peers.
It must be infiuriating to not be able to identify people you deal with then. Like, you cannot contol as much...
Right?
Like you get lost and have no guide, no map... How lonely...
Change must be difficult for you I gather...

My first reply didn't get across the point I wanted to make. So, here I go again.

Do firemen get paid for nothing? I get paid to be on call. If something breaks, I fix it. I am a repairman. They pay me to be at the factory. They would rather I did nothing. That means that everything is running and they are making car parts. You assumed too much.

So, you have to have inflammatory verbiage to discuss disagreements with peers? Can you imagine if countries did this? Discussions of disagreements can, and should, be civil. If someone resorts to inflammatory remarks when discussing disagrrements with me, they are a lower rank than I am and therefore not a peer.

I deal very respectably with people I identify with. That's why I identify with them. If they used inflammatory remarks I would not be able to identify with them. I would not understand why they resort to petty inflammatory remarks to get their point across. Therefore I would not identify with them. It is annoying to have to deal with people who are inflammatory, but people who can discuss things in a rational civil manner are very welcome. Even if we are polar opposites in our disagreements.

Agreed. My post was really, really cheap. My sincere apologies.
"Attention Whores" is not really flattering either, you'll have to admit, which is why I reacted so strongly.
Nevertheless, my apologies stand. Sorry.

I am in favor of a once a year chance to change. I was MacGorilla, a name I used to promote a website five years dead. I use zizban everywhere else and I aksed Demonhood for a name change but was turned down, thus the name change.
