I wonder if it's pointing to a different memcache server again?

It's still on our old memcache server. This appears to be a bug in vB regarding forums with multi-server setups.
The last time we looked at it, we set up a new memcache on a server with light load. The 'memcache' errors went away, but staff members sometimes could not log in for days - including admins. Maybe regular members as well. So we switched it back.
At least the 'memcache' errors go away on a reload. To let the vB people look at the more serious errors, we'd have had to leave MacNN on the fresh memcache - the one that logs staff members out for random intervals. It did not seem worth the cost - better to wait for a vB update to address the issue.

I am getting this error for about 10-15% of New Posts or Today's Posts queries:
Fatal error: Unable to connect to memcache server in [path]/includes/class_datastore.php on line 224
Separately and not forum-related, I am getting a 'Presented By' line/headline in the MacNN RSS feed that used to not be there.
edit: ok, nothing new here with this specific error. I saw it was just a few posts above mine. Based on reader's comments it looks like we're just letting this ride until a wider vB fix.

Also, the favicon wasn't showing on my MBP earlier. It's showing on my PC but it may be cached.

The favicon.ico is present in the directory - it downloads and opens ok. Try clearing cache on the MBP?

Cleared everything bar saved passwords - restarted Firefox and it's back.
Thanks.

It appears the forum is resetting my display settings for forums (view threads older than a month). This has happened to me twice now in one particular forum, and once in another.

I'm not sure why the mods deleted that post, but now it incorrectly looks like you're calling me whiney.

Just checked and, yes, it's happened again. I view MacNN on 3 different computers, but I don't think that'd be the problem.

At least some of the display prefs are stored in browser cookies - the collapse triangle settings in particular. Which settings are being forgotten?

"Display Options"
More importantly, I'm on the computer I changed it on yesterday, and found it reset to default.

The 'Display Options' box below forums isn't saved between sessions. At least, they never have been for me.
You can change your global view settings (like thread age cutoff, etc) in your userCP. Or leave the browser window open but hidden.

It's possible this is the case, but if so, I've managed to not run into this problem for a few years.
Either way, I took your advice and adjusted the setting in User CP. Good enough.

Looks like we just came out of a "Server Busy" bout. I fully blame my most recent picture in the "Pics of yourself" thread, and I sincerely apologize.

What's up with board performance lately? The whole suckiness is back.
Lately I've been getting a lot of these php errors. Other times page load is just slow. And now this morning with about three people online I get the "Forum is too busy" message.
What gives? My MacNN addiction is in danger!

That’s odd—I haven’t had any issues at all, and I’ve been here at all times of day, except early morning.

Board's acting up again. It's slow, disconnects, etc. What's the deal?
And what was that downtime "Upgrading. Come back in 30 min." yesterday about?

The upgrade yesterday was a patch update. vB released it to address a possible security exploit. It didn't increment the board version number (3.8.1).
I don't know the answer on the other issues, except that they seem to be affecting all the MacNN sites. That would suggest a shared DB server issue, or a routing problem somewhere upstream of the forums.

The server has been busy off and on for the majority of the day, though regular MacNN has been accessible to me during that time.

Same here. More on than off, though—it’s been giving me the server busy error four out of five times I’ve tried loading a page since about noon (six hours ago).

Same here. Today was a major PITA. And the fact that there's zero notification doesn't exactly make it any better.

While I'm sure you guys have more pressing matters to attend to at the moment, I just noticed that profile addresses have changed, leading to an issue where the address to the profiles for Dakar² and Dakarʒ are the same, and Dakarʒ's is MIA.

I'll take the bump as an excuse to reask this.

The forum keeps logging me out even if I'm only away for five minutes. Is this a bug, or is it supposed to do that? It gets kind of annoying.

You shouldn't need to do it unless you start having problems or want to clear your browsing history.

Have you been commenting on News stories in the meantime? A longstanding site bug is if you post a comment on the News page, it logs you out of the forums.

I did that checkbox. Maybe it's alright now. Even if I don't check that box, I would think I wouldn't be logged out.
