Huh, weird. Usually "Remember Me" is just something that tells the page to remember who you are every time you try to log in. However, browsers do this too, so I have little need for those boxes, which is why I don't usually check them.

Those are two different things.

The “Remember me?” box on the page sets a cookie that remembers that you’re logged in, until the cookie expires (normally on Internet forums, if the cookie is set, a new cookie is set every time you log in, which means that the cookie only expires if you don’t visit the site at all for a long time—then you’ll have to log in again).

The “Do you want to remember this password?” browser pop-up does exactly what it says: it stores the user name/password combination in the browser (or, in OS X, in the Keychain), so that the browser will have the fields all filled out for you next time you’re logged out and need to log in again.

With GMail (and other sites) the "Remember Me" button just makes it so that it knows who you are every time you go to the login page.

They still set or update a cookie. Your GMail cookie has your username in it so GMail can fill that in for you. Sites that log you in automatically (like ours) keep other stuff too, like a hash of a password or other stuff. And they ALL have an expiration date. Forum.macnn.com cookies look like they expire in about 24 hours.

It's gotta be more than that.

I've come back from travels after two or three weeks, and the cookie was still ok (i.e., I didn't have to login again).

I wasn't intending to say that cwk's problem was all due to expired cookies. I was just intending to describe the mechanism through which sites use persistent "remember me" cookies to log one in. It does indeed HAVE to be something else. Browser bugginess, some other Web app interfering, that sort of thing...

I wasn't referring to cwk's problem.

I was saying that your guess that " Forum.macnn.com cookies look like they expire in about 24 hours" can't be right, because they definitely are good for weeks. Unless, of course, even expired cookies will keep you signed in. Then I have to question the usefulness of the expiration date altogether.

From looking at my macnn cookies, the bbuserid and bbpassword are good for 8 months and change. If it's the utmz cookie, that one is good for about 75 days.

I must have "hit the jackpot" when I looked at my own cookies, because all but one MacNN cookie was set to expire about 24 hours after I'd signed on that morning...

I don't know, if the hampstor doesn't get well again soon I'm going to start experiencing increased productivity on the order of more than a dime per reload.

I've been trying to start a new thread for two day's, but just hang and get error messages. Tried two computers and my iphone, safari, firefox, deleted cookies... Just hangs on "newpost" or crashes the browser. Iphone says network connection cut (but all other sites work fine).

Search is still a bit funny. If I search for "post" I get an error that I can't search so soon after my previous search. If I search for "monkey" it works fine.

Certain very common words apparently cause PHP to outstrip it's RAM setting, like "post" and "computer". On the other hand, "G5" or "intel" search ok.

Yeah, I still think it's a bug if it tells me I'm doing searches too frequently rather then saying the word is too common. Anyway, thanks for fixing it so I can post again.

Yes, details. Including the target forum and thread title. Before we increased PHP memory settings, failures were sensitive to title length.

Forum is Lounge, thread title is "Time to be proud of Canada!".

It's not the headers. When PHP tries to allocate a bit more RAM than allowed, Apache kills the thread silently, causing these symptoms. After the search issues, we bumped the PHP RAM settings. I'll look into it further when our server guys are available.

In the meantime, you can probably make it go through by using a short thread title. Then edit the title as desired within the first 20 minutes.

Odd... I've had to deal with the memory limit config several times on my own, but it (nor the max post size setting) was never triggered by something as simple as a text-only form post, nor was the protection provided by the Suhosin patch. Weird... I'm not doubting you, just intrigued is all, especially the part about the short thread title which is a pretty unusual sort of remedy

It's clearer if you see it at full res. Looks like the iPad's Safari isn't putting all the slices together properly.

I don't know if there's anything that can be done, it seems to be Safari's fault, but I thought I'd pass it along anyway.

This has been reported intermittently, that Search fails silently if you are not logged in. It just drops you back on the Search page.

Turns out human verification (a CAPTCHA) is required when not logged in, and that code never got added to the search page template.

This issue is fixed.

"Add to Ignore List" has been added to the username popup menu on posts.

This was on effgee's todo list during the redesign, but a visibility issue never got sorted out.

For some reason most recent posts seem to be reflected against the wrong thread when viewing from the main page for some reason:

In this image you can see that Im listed as having the most recent post in a thread about Netflix that I've never posted in.

Edit: removing Img tags, trying to post images from an iPhone is a pita.

Edit again: the problem is just in the News section - looks like the News Poster account isn't recognized properly in some way.
