I learned this first hand today in my car kit. ARGH! Now what I want to know is what is this 'Adapter' that is coming that will enable the charging? Anyone have any idea?
What is there to miss?

Well, obviously the fact that iPod/iPhone devices including Apple's own products don't charge the iPhone 3G, despite the fact that the form factor of the dock connector is exactly the same.

And the fact that if your $400 Bose Sound Dock or Apple Hi-Fi or factory-installed dock-connector car kit doesn't charge your iPhone, the solution isn't *quite* to just go out and buy a new charger.

But you'd know that if you'd bothered to read the thread.

My question is, is this something Apple could reverse through a software or firmware update for the phone? You know, in the off-chance they come to their senses and realize what a bad idea this was...

Unlikely, since Firewire and USB power actually use different pins (and voltages)

Yippee!!! Now you can pay $45 to have your phone do what it should have been able to do from the beginning. Of course, good luck docking your phone in anything with that butt plug sticking out.

Apple does this kind of crap all the time. Remember all of the headphone plugs that wouldn't fit into the 1st gen iPhone.

Apple's obsession with secrecy is a little over-the-top if you ask me. There was no reason they couldn't have divulged this info months ago to give people time to prepare.

Thanks for the link, Ort. I'm not going to pre-order that, I'll wait until they start shipping. Hopefully there will be other companies with similar products out in a month or two as well.

This would be perfect for me as it could plug right into the cable coming out of my glove box and go right into my phone.

I posted this in the "iPhone 3G accessory compatibility list" thread, but putting info here since this is what tripped me up originally since I bought 2 chargers in a row that didn't work with the 3G iphone. $40 for that "converter" is ridiculous and I'd rather just buy a new charger:

I agree... Something like that little converter should cost max $20. A new car charger costs about that much.
