Is there any way to wake up a sleeping Mac remotely (can a magic/WoL packet be sent from remotely to wake up a computer)?
If so, for a program like Apple remote Desktop, shouldn't there be a way for it to automatically send this packet and wake up a sleeping remote computer?

I think I did it in the past with a similar program. But of course port forwarding must be set appropriately, and it only works on Ethernet, not AirPort.

The answer is no, you can't send Wake-on-LAN packets over IP, they are defined as only being over a subnet (by MAC address). So the packets cannot be routed, and you cannot do it directly across subnets. There are some solutions with having an intermediate computer on the subnet do the work for you, but it does not sound like that is a solution for you.

How exactly would you tell a computer to wake up through its wireless card when the wireless card is powered down as part of sleep? Wake-on-LAN works because the network card is still drawing power while the rest of the computer sleeps. Wireless is simply too power hungry to make that practical.

not sure how the specifics, but Intel is working on it ... or maybe it's already out there and implemented?
