Meh. I liked Fallout & Fallout 2 a lot better. This is just another FPS.

I guess. Either way the gameplay doesn't change. I find them pretty boring.

Have you played Fallout 3? Because it only plays like a FPS if you want it to. If you use VATS it plays like an action RPG.

OK. I've had the game all weekend. This is the game of the year (so far)
I LOVE:
the environment
the characters
the insane amount of items weapons and tactics
the skillups

not a fan of VATS because I'm an FPS fan.

This game reminds me of Bioshock meets Fable 2 meets Oblivion.

It's all about agility (not necessarily the stat).

Get in close unless the enemy is in a position where they won't charge you; hit VATS, take a shot, and move. Rinse and repeat. Even the big guys go down relatively easily that way, but taking damage is unavoidable. The movement inbetween allows time for the AP to regenerate.

I have plenty of weapons and ammo, just not enough food...

It's definitely a must-buy game though.

i'm thinking about picking this up, i'm not usually a fan of over-involved RPG's but this seems like it could appeal to me more than games like Oblivion due to the FPS elements. It seems like i need a trial run/demo/friend with this game.

The FPS aspect is what is turning me off. I have Oblivion, but...I could never really get into it. It's a great game, but I detest the first-person aspect, and just did not like the whole "create your own experience". Basically, I was looking to hop on and enjoy the ride, not have to drive myself.

So I am assuming I would not go for Fallout 3. And the incoherrent story did not help either in Oblivion. Pretty graphics though.

It only plays like an FPS if you want it to. You can switch to a third person perspective and do all of your combat in the VATS mode if you wish.

It's similar to Oblivion's 3rd person mode IMO. So, yeah... kind of wonky.

Just to throw out a vote for the "I hate FPSs, will I love it/I love FPSs, will I hate it" question... I start to dislike FPSs after about an hour, while I very much like the system in F3.

Interestingly, it so far plays the way I tend to (badly) play FPSs.

Sprinkle in some slow motion, exploding head wound, rag doll animations and I'm a happy camper.

Edit: It's odd. I'm not having any issues with getting guns or ammo, but I'm really worried I'm going to run out of stimpacks. I have about 13 now, but I started the last mission with 30. Admittedly, I've been avoiding the food, which was probably a mistake, but something happens in-game that helps you get over that.

I ran out of stimpacks somewhere around the L.A. Boneyards in the first Fallout. It really sucked.

So after getting to see this game in action at a friends, i broke down and bought it. Although i'm not very far into it, its truly one of the most immersive/expansive games i've ever played, the FPS elements allow a great mix with the VATS system. The true vastness of the world coupled with so many choices/versatile mission objectives has got me addicted. Although i generally dont like RPG's, this one has changed my mind.

While it might not be for everyone, you'll know after the first 30 or so minutes if you love or hate this game. I didn't think anything could rival Gears 2 as my GOTY, but we have a contender.

Gears 2 can't be game of the year - the story just sucks. This game, however, has a pretty good shot.

Finished up the main story yesterday (pretty awesome), and my recommendation for everyone is to make a separate save when you return to the citadel after you leave raven (if you don't know, you will after you get this far) so that you can do more side missions and level up because once the games over... its over.

Great game, really enjoyed the main story/side missions/freedom/weapons/exploring, this is generally not my favorite type of game but i was REALLY impressed. My full recommendation for anyone that gets a chance to play through it should set some time aside and do it. I worried that the gameplay of gaining experience/leveling up etc. would get repetitive and boring, but due to the variety of missions this NEVER is an issue.

I got this game last week and had a lot of time to play it over the holiday weekend since I was sick.

I'm officially addicted to this game. I am holding off on finishing the main story, since I want to explore even more. There is so much of the world that you'd never see if you just did the main quest line. So you say that the game ends after you finish the main quest line, and you can't continue to explore? That is not cool, IMO.

But other than that I love this game. If they had figured out a way to include co-op (I know it would be pretty much impossible), I think it would be up there with one of my all time favorites. Its close, but the solitary nature gets lonely sometimes (I have no friends IRL).

The ending was terrible. I regret not fully exploring the Capital Wasteland before seeing the conclusion.

Anyhow, what machine are you guys running Fallout 3 on? (need specs for running the game decently).

I haven't picked up a new Power Mac yet, trying to hold out until I actually need it/ Nehalem chipset comes out.
Now I know, and knowing is half the battle!

Hearing the ending was bad makes me not want to play it. I don't like playing games and the ending sucks.

From what I've heard, the ending depends on what you've done in the game up until then. It changes depending on the things you've done, karma, etc. But I haven't finished yet, so I can't say for sure.

BTW - who/what is Fawkes?

Just picked up the game earlier today, and wow, already in complete love over here.

Is it just me or is Fallout 3 exactly the way they should have made Bioshock? You have a sprawling world that you are able to wander about at your leisure and scavenge. You have an extensive ability to inventory things. Choices you make actually impact the flow of the game, whether you are to forward or to nice actually matters, as apposed to just a different ending in BS.

VATS is actually pretty damn entertaining, I find a good VAT'ing then some well aimed secondary bursts works well for my style, and my current accuracy.

I have to say that I was perfectly comfortable killing wild dogs, mole rats, and rad roaches and then all of a sudden I run into two Mutant Brutes while wandering to Minefield. I almost **** myself, but they were dispatched after a little getting my ass kicked.

So far I give it 10/10. I love my multiplayer games (L4D, H3, GoW2) but it's been a while since I got sucked into a game this quickly. When I played Half Life 2 was likely last time I was this impressed with a game. All this praise and I have barely scratched the surface.

Once you experience some of the more interesting locations you'll really start to appreciate the size/scope/quality of the world your running around. The first time i stood in front of the Washington monument facing the capital building....awesome

Just you. I love Fallout 3 and love Bioshock, but they're completely different styled games.

I'm on my second playthrough now to get the last few achievements, and I'm going as evil this time. It's a lot of fun not having to worry about how you're treating people and instead just shooting them in the face. Blowing up the bomb was quite amazing as well. It sucks being a low level again, though, as being at level 20 makes any fight a cakewalk, but now I actually have to monitor my health...

Right but BioShock was also more of a narrative than Fallout, and it lent itself to being more linear.

I don't think you can compare the two and say that bioshock should of been like fallout but I can see how a game like fallout (open world rpg w fps style) can take many forms one of which could be a world like rapture but the bioshock style relied on the direct storytelling and "linear style"

In the end, I think you're right.

But for the sequel (or prequel), I think there might be more to gained from an open Rapture to explore.

It was a real test of willpower to pull myself away this morning at 5AM....

What I'm saying about Bioshock is that it's predecessor (System Shock 2) is actually a lot more like Fallout 3 than BS is.

Sek, if your looking for a melee weapon (since ammo can be expensive and rare) get the schematic for the "Shishkebab". By far the most awesome weapon you build (IMO)... (basically its a flaming sword made from a gas tank and a lawnmower blade)

Other advice: find dogmeat, find the alien crash site and get the alien blaster (but only use in desperate situations since ammo is almost non existent), save mini-nukes at all costs. Upgrade repair skill, makes it much easier to keep your weapons in good condition seeing that you'll find multiples of almost every weapon on a regular basis.

The Railway Rifle is better than the Shishkebab, if only for the hilarious slow motion decapitations.

your right, its a close 2nd in weapons to build only because the ammo is usually free and plentiful
