Conversations here in the lounge, while there are fewer of them, seem to be a lot more civil than, say, five or six years ago. What happened? Did we all get older and wiser? Did the antagonistic people leave?

I think this is a good thing btw.

They either got banned, or cried about the moderation, took their ball and went home.

^ That, for sure.

Some of it is the post-democalyptic lull, still.

The rest might be the onset of old age.

Facebook happened. It sucks up a lot of online interaction that used to happen on more "fringe" forums like this, nasioc, etc. I've noticed a decline everywhere compared to 2005.

Also, this place was over-moderated. Spirited debates and disagreements were not tolerated, pussies kept getting butthurt about differing opinions, and then people would keep reporting each other. Some, like that ****ing dickface Kilbey, would know EXACTLY how to walk the line, taunt others and be a giant raging infected asshole, without breaking any rules, so they'd hang around longer, but I think eventually everyone caught on to who the actual dickfaces were. We need to be nice and civil to each other now... which is kinda boring sometimes.

Agreed.

Much of the "Hey, have you seen this!?" is now on Facebook.

But that doesn't explain the change in tone.

This, however, does:

Well, Phileas, there's your answer.

Nobody bothers getting in fights with Rob anymore.

That bit gave me flashbacks of Abe's "meek as a lamb" phase.

The raging conservatives were never as much of a problem as the angsty liberals spoiling for a fight. Not to say both sides couldn't be a right PITA, but there were always more Lefties with poison pens.

Today it's more, "Oh, it's you again? Your feigned outrage and crappy manners weren't that compelling in 2004, and now it's just boring."

You're attacking me in a thread I wasn't even participating in? And you're the one complaining about civility?

I guess I'll just hit the report button.

FWIW, it's completely immaterial that you're a "liberal".

But in the days after the election, this place actually felt…NICE. In a way it hadn't in many years.

And it was definitely because people who ONLY hang out here to snarl at others in the Political Lounge simply weren't there. It changed the tone of the whole board.

And a couple of us went, "Huh. Why can't it just stay this way?"

Not that people need to stay away, but dammit, civil discourse over a drink at a party really isn't that hard.

It's mostly a function of actually being interested in how the other guy ticks, and just shutting up and walking away when you've decided you don't like how he ticks on a certain subject matter, and maybe talking to him again about a different subject when you bump into him later.

You know, rather than having judged from the outset what he's like, and beating your view into him until he shuts up.

"Attack"? Really? You're the one spoiling for a fight, I'm just pointing it out.

Even for someone whose goal is crushing their opponent, being interested in how the other guy ticks is equally important.

Ironic then, how unimportant many consider it.
