What do you mean by "cross-platform incompatible"? Firefox works on Mac, Windows, OS/2 Warp, and maybe even Linux. It IS cross-platform.

And like most other cross-platform solutions, it's so intently cross-platform that it is inherently INcompatible with the things that actually differentiate the platforms and make their respective individual advantages.

Like the keychain.

Or complete drag-and-drop support (in earlier versions of Firefox).

It's been a few weeks now. Recently, Safari has started to crash more often - which is quite annoying! However apart from this my usage of it has been practically flawless. A few tiny problems such as links not hovering correctly but nothing overly annoying. With Glims I've sorted out all my tab options exactly the way I need to. It couldn't be any more minimalist after a bit of customization, but it does everything that I need.

I can't wait to see the next release with all its fixes.

And custom keyboard shortcuts, which are like the most awesome thing ever.

Huh? Setting custom shortcuts in the Keyboard and Mouse preference pane (assuming that's what you're referring to) works fine with Firefox.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

No, it doesn't. If you think it does, then actually try to use the keyboard shortcuts.

The really weird thing is that scrolling using the page-up and page-down keys is instantaneous. Scrolling via any other method, though - two fingers on the trackpad, the arrow keys, clicking the scroll-bar with the mouse - causes the five second delay. Other functions, such as opening and closing new windows or tabs and visiting websites is just like normal. Dragging tabs around is also normal, and resizing windows is normal - but drag or scroll a window, and it sits there for five seconds. Weird, huh?

I'm sure that quitting and relaunching Safari will fix this, but still - so much for Safari 4 being fast.

edit: okay, it's still doing it even after relaunching Safari. I am not amused. Time to try a logout/login...
I've had exactly the same experience as you described. I'll give the next version of S4 a try.

After using safari 4 for a while I found it almost unusable in stock guise. I have it setup to look exactly like safari 3.

However it still does a few things I don't like:

First it freezes if there are animated GIFs as avatars on forums, and I have found no way to turn animation off.

Second, if I drag an item into the bookmarks bar (I always drag it as far to the right as possible) it will somehow put itself in front of the bookmark to the left of where I'm dragging and move that one out of the bar, so I have to adjust it, incredibly obnoxious.

I cannot use Safari in any version simply because it's lacking behind Firefox in javascript. For example, if I type something into the JS text editor in my online college class and go to another tab, in Safari all text is gone when I go back...in Firefox it stays. Simple decision for me.

While Safari is faster than FireFox in benchmarks, I can't tell the difference in day to day use. Both are very fast and much better than anything else out there. I had an Amiga 500 with sidecar CPU expansion that had a toggle switch on it. With it, I could switch on the fly from 7MHz to 28MHz. I couldn't really tell the difference unless I was playing a game (Gunship 2000 was the one)...the four times speed increase wasn't noticeable unless I had something that stressed my computer. Same thing with Safari and FireFox.

What text editor is that? I've never seen behavior like that from Javascript in any browser. Are you certain it's Javascript (and not, for example, Java)?

Safari 4 displays none of those behaviours here.

It's a Java, not JS app called EditLive! by Ephox. Try the demo.

Works in Safari and FF but when I switch tabs and go back in Safari all text is gone.

Java on browser sucks! I have it turned off for years. Java is too heavy.

It's all AJAX for me with your choice of scripting language such as PHP.

Well there you go, it's Java. Nonetheless it retains the text in it when I switch back and forth.

Sure you have the latest Java installed?

I do have the latest Java installed. I never looked into the version of EditLive my college uses versus what's currently the latest and it looks like my college version is older (much older). Irregardless, that version doesn't retain text when tabs are switched in Safari but it does work in FireFox. Here's a video to show what I'm talking about.

Rather lame and backhanded. Comparing to rational software preference to addiction is both asinine and insulting to people who suffer real addiction.

I'm confused. This is a thread about Safari. I don't think talking about it here is a sign of any unhealthy attachment.

Is there a way to make the "Top Sites" in the new Safari your home screen, I kinda like the way it looks.

I think it would be much simpler to just select "Top Sites" from the popup menu for new windows and/or new tabs in the General preferences.

Sorry, didn't mean to insult anyone or anything like that. I'm just pointing out the fact that I'm not a big fan of Safari, and it seems a lot of people are, so I just thought I'd step out of the way of everyone else who does like it. No rudeness intended.

Ahh.

Those aren't Tabs, that the Top Sites page - it loads a fresh copy of your page every time you use it. You are not going back to a tab, you are reloading the page. Turn off top sites or go to the edit thing and click the X to take your page out of it.

Yes, we noticed, since we read the release notes.

Enable "Zoom Text Only" in the "View" menu to revert to the old behavior. Not sure though why anyone would prefer the old behavior.

No really, I never read all the release notes and typically wait until I see if there's a good or bad review (e.g. "it beeped up my Mac", or "it made my Mac Snappier").

The tabs and the stop/reload/loading thingy in the url bar must go. It's worse UI design than Microsoft joined with a random example of the Linux crowd would come up with.

The reload thing is a complete non-issue - pure muscle memory.

On Safari 3 at work, I find myself irritated because the damn reload icon isn't where it's supposed to be.

The tabs on top, I've got used to, but there are still the click-through/drag issues.

I can never switch tabs intentionally with the tabbed titlebar. I guess I accidentally move the mouse a tiny bit when I click (it doesn't move the window, but that's my only guess), so it doesn't register as a tab switch. So then I click again and the window minimizes.

iMac G5 - I'm having a decent experience with the Safari 4 beta. I'm finding it faster and more stable than the v3.x builds that I've used.

Still wish that Apple brought back the multi-colored Activity menu like they had in Safari 2.

anyone have a problem with putting a site in the Top Sites boxes? i visit espn.com a million times a day on purpose to try and make it show up, even delete the top sites i dont want, but it never does (the subpages will, but never the front page). How do you add a website manually to Top Sites?

Press the Edit button at the bottom, and then drag the link (or the little URL icon thingy) onto the spot you want it FROM ANOTHER WINDOW.

Needing to do it from another window is somewhat broken functionality, IMO, but at least it works. One of the things that should probably be fixed.
