Has anyone tried this with a 3GS?

I'd like to have tethering, but I see no mention of the 3GS, the only listed requirement being the 3.0 software.

I'd be very careful with this kind of hack.

You never know how AT&T is going to screw you for this. You most likely violate their T&Cs. Just imagine they suddenly slap you with a volume based surcharge (like $ 10 per GB) for the data leached.

I, for one, are not going to even try this.

$10/GB would be awesome.

Last time I was in Japan for business I ended up using quite a bit of 3G data. I was billed about $18 per MB for data roaming. Yep. Per megabyte. Thank God I didn't have to pay for that myself.

You are right, I meant per MB.

Germany charges EUR 20 per MB. F***ing crazy.

Point is, you don't know where AT&T is gonna set the overage charges to. Too much risk for me.

http://help.benm.at (visit with iPhone)

That did the job for me (factory unlocked 3GS from Italy + 10GB data plan from my favorite carrier). Tethering, MMS, everything.
I don’t think it works with AT&T though.

That's kept placing the carrier file in the wrong location for me - so it wouldn't work. Found a terminal command to re-allow custom .ipcc files to be added to the iPhone. I've tethered since the days of beta 4 and have had no problems. As long as you aren't going all out excessive, it should be fine..

Apple is patching this with OS 3.1
Don't update if you want to keep it.

But, like I said, be prepared for AT&T to slap you with a hefty data package fine.
For sure they won't leave that money on the table.

I haven't seen an actual "limit" for the 3G data plan and it is described as "unlimited". However, AT&T does have a "excessive use" clause.

Using your phone to surf from a laptop isn't going to use much more data than using your phone to surf. Start downloading files, etc. and it will rack up quickly, though.

Up here in Canada Rogers has, surprisingly, decided that for once they won't screw their customers and allow tethering. I've got a 6GB plan and have been using tethering extensively. As long as you don't watch music or download large files you should be ok.

Well, if you are on a limited data plan, of course it doesn't matter.

The point is that AT&T in the US automatically offers a flat rate, unlimited plan.

Sniff the user agent from the browser if they detect high bandwidth usage, I suppose.
