I remember hearing that beta 2.1 had some stipulations on how many messages you could send within a given time frame (like you couldn't send more then 3 messages consecutively) or something along those lines....if that makes sense to anybody, does this final version still have that issue?

Thanks.

Ah, but did they limit the 10-messages in 10-seconds limit or whatever it was in the beta? That severely cramps my style. I won't install it if that's still in place.

It don't seem to have that limit anymore. I just spammed someone with 15 lines in a row real fast and I didn't get any messages like I did with the beta.

Void my last statement about it being gone. I tried it again and got this message. "The AIM service could not send the message: You have sent too much data too quickly. Please wait a little while before sending more."

I wonder if that is a restriction from the iChat software or from the AIM service in general.

Is there anyway to manually edit a file (.plist) to change this behavior in v2.1? It's not with the AIM service as this worked just fine under v2.0 of iChat...

Darn that certainly is not cool. Anyone know what ports need to be open on a firewall to use the video feature? I'm asking because I'm having problems with it. Well, my girlfriend is, on her pc.

Grrrrr!!!
I installed iChat 2.1 and now I can not video or audio chat w. other mac users that I had no issue w/ before. and I'm talking about 2 iSights here (WTF?). I do have a Linksys router but my machine is in the DMZ and is wide open. I have tried 3 different mac users and get the same thing every time. here is what connection Dr. says......

2004-03-23 21:34:29 -0800: No data has been received for the last 10 seconds.
Audio channel info: local machine using 192.168.1.167:16386, expecting remote machine to send to 66.229.xxx.xxx:16386
Video channel info: local machine using 192.168.1.167:16384, expecting remote machine to send to 66.229.xxx.xxx:16384

To me it looks like it the ports are being blocked but I checked the DMZ and my machines IP is there. Any info would be appreciated.

I've experienced that error message in iChat 2.0 (I haven't upgraded to 2.1 at all yet), so I'm inclined to agree - it is most likely an issue with AIM.

Try taking the router out of the equation and see how that works. Even though iChat is a lot more router friendly than older video conference software it isn't as perfect as Steve lead us to believe. Worst case you should be able to reinstall iChat 2.0 from your Panther CDs.

Anyone had any troubles with direct connections or file transfers since upgrading? When my PC friends try to send me a file now it gives them some bizzare error....never happened before the upgrade.

I haven't had any problems since upgrading, but then again I haven't had any problems since installing Panther back in September.

Have anyone tried video conferencing (ichat 2.1) with a PC user (aim 5.5)? ? Did it really works better or what?

It's already there..
But technically it's a modification of ICQ rather than AIM/iChat. IE, Your ICQ friends need to have the latest version of ICQ, and you add them to your iChat buddies list in much the same way as you do for a regular AIM buddy.. Just enter the number rather than a name, and enter it as an AIM name rather than .Mac. Works fine here.

I keep trying to test this out with someone...I have a PC with AIM 5.5 and I cannot audio chat with a Mac user using iChat. That's really sad because if I do get a Mac I need to be able to do this so I can communicate with my friends while I am overseas.....I hope that things get fixed because I really do not like th eprogram iVisit,...I don't care fo rthe interfact, but apparently thats the only program that will allow voice chat between mac and pc users without a problem.....its just that compared to other programs, I don't like that interface....

So they have to actually be running the official ICQ client? Most of my friends who use ICQ don't use the ICQ client, they use Miranda, or Gaim, or Trillian. I use Proteus for that, but it would be great if I could talk to them via iChat

Never having tried those apps, I don't know about compatability with them. But it's supposedly a new standard of ICQ protocol, or something.. So 3rd party ICQ apps in theory should have updated their software to allow this to work also. Whether they have or not, I don't know. This new arrangement has been around maybe a year or so.. So plenty of time for the other companies to have got their act together.
You could always try it though, Can't hurt.

I do video and voice chats with my friends back in europe... (2 people) they both have AIM 5.5 for Windows XP and I have iChat with Panther. It seems like this only works with XP. No other windows system. But it works.

Thanks, for the info. I have several friends that use it (popular among IT professionals), including myself and i'll get one of them to make sure they have the latest client and try it out.

seems alright so far... i think they finally fixed the timestamp bug (time stamps would be as much as 5 minutes off. it was always fast, too, so (for instance) i'd start typing at 10:30 but the stamp would say 10:34)

I am a bit confused

Video + Video (PC to Mac) does work
Audio + Audio (PC to Mac) doesn't work

(Correct me if I am wrong)

How about Video (PC side) + audio (mac side) does this work?

How about the reverse Video on the mac side?

It would be great if some one who tried it would clear up the confustion

If video-to-video PC-Mac chatting is possible there is absolutely no reason that Apple and AOL can incorporate an audio-only chatting feature in iChat and AIM.

Ok I'm not a programmer please someone tell me that there is a serious technical limitation to it.

Is there anybody who has an older version of iChat that doesn't have the 'too much data too quickly' problem? It's as annoying as ... well... it's very very very annoying.
