Hi,

I'm looking for a list of words that are "obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening, sexually-oriented or any other material that may violate any applicable laws" A client wants their program to have an 'censor' program.

I've done some searching and found a bunch of sites that explain why such a list is needed, but I haven't actually found a list of words. I can create a partial list, but I fortunately do not have an extensive knowledge of such words.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

-Ben

Not exactly the response I was looking for. Very amusing though :-) I'll let you konw when I'll be in the UK and we'll discuss those cans of Stella.

Roget's profanisaurus used to be online, seems Viz has published a book from all the reader's submissions.

You can get collect what you need from the f***y dip at a somewhat slower pace, I guess.

You mean Roger's - it would be very progressive to attribute the profanisaurus to Roget

Besides, very rarely will you find someone posting that they've just 'toasted a bum crumpet'...

Alternately, you could come to NYC and drive a cab for a day. I guarantee you'll hear some that aren't on any list anywhere yet.
I saw a woman with a sweatshirt that said "Guess", so I said, "Implants?"

Course. Being able to drive could actually be a hinderance. Those with driving experience usually expect some sort of rules of the road. We have none. If you've ever been on the bumper cars, you're in.

I went to high school in NYC. On my first day of Driver's-Ed they had me make a left, right, then bam! I was on Broadway! It was absolutely crazy, overly stressful, and nuts...but after that one day I never feared driving again.

Yeah once you drive here, you can drive anywhere, even a warzone.

Even in Paris?

I once drove round the roundabout which circles the Arc De Triumph (Triomphe) and it was mental - about 8 lanes of complete chaos...

Even driving when I lived in Cyprus wasn't that bad - although, they at least drive on the left...

I wonder how long it would take to be banned if we started our own profanity list here...

I'm currently in Dijon, France, and the drivers are really good. It shocked me at first, 'cause I was expecting the kinda drivers that you find in Paris. The cars in Paris are scary...close to the kinda drivers I found in NY. In Dijon, the cars will come to a full stop if a pedestrian even turns their shoulders or makes the tiniest hint of the intention of crossing the street. It's a pleasure to walk around Dijon.

Oh, by the way, I still haven't found any sort of profanity word list. If anyone knows of one, please let me know. (also, please don't start using this list as a form of creating such a list...it would be a shame to see this topic vanish into censorship)

There's a guy named gollum (~the 11th post down) at this site who has made quite a good contribution to what you want...

I'm sure google will find more as I keep trying.

Actually, there's probably a good pre-built list if you download one of the many bulletin-board packages (e.g. phpbb). Forum users are notorious for colourful and inventive ways of communicating the profane - so the 'stopword' list usually takes into account substitutions of 3 for e, or 'mistypings' of common words.

Except for this one, as Philzilla has proven.

Also, I have yet to see a list that takes simple ASCII codes into account (ie. substituting &97; for a, etc. [or is it 95? I forget])...

I guess you'd convert all html entities to ASCII characters before you performed a search on the stop words?

Yeah, or the other way around... it should be possible, shouldn't it? Just do the search on stop words after the ASCII codes are converted into actual letters...

Download the source, look in phraselists directory for all sorts of categories of banned or weighted phrases.
