I really want to pull the trigger on a 24" AL iMac but theres tons of posts - esp at support.apple.com - about peoples iMac's freezing. The worst part is Apple and the drones at my local Apple store haven't acknowledged that theres a problem.

Mine freezes constantly. I'm planning to take it back and hopefully get one that doesn't. Guess it's back to the old PowerBook.

Never a bobble with my 20" iMac. Maybe there is a problem for a lot of people, but with the number of new iMacs that have been sold, it's my opinion that the problem is VERY rare. And if you do wind up having a problem, you can take it to an Apple Store, show them that the problem exists, and they'll do something about it. The thing is, most people report that their freezes are not easily repeatable...

I can easily make it freeze within seconds by running Quake 4 full settings, other than that I don't know of any other ways to force it to freeze.

IMac software update 1.3 posted on 11/02/07 was supposed to have fixed that problem. I haven't had any freeze since that update.

PS I'm also running Leopard.

The freeze is hardware related. It also has nothing to do with 1.3. If your Imac freezes take it to apple. there is no reason people should be istting there holding onto defective hardware.

I've had the 24" Al iMac and haven't had a freeze ever. It's performed flawlessly.

I've had a 24" for two weeks no freezes. Also wasn't there a fix posted by Apple a couple days ago solving the freeze problem? I installed it just in case, though I have no problems.

It should be interesting to see how many new iMacs freeze. Why don't we add a poll? The percentage of those that freeze is supposed to be small. But is it?

would it be related to the imac's week of production? I believe my iMac 24 is a week 43 / oct 22 (digits 3 and 4 of the serial number, after the letter) and it hasn't frozen up yet (had it for a week).

Just for completeness, I bought my iMac the day after they were released, and was built in week 30 of this year, or the beginning of August. I am running Tiger.

My 24" iMac was apparently built week 35. I received it on August 31. (Bought on Apple online store.)

I have never had any freezing episodes. I hope this doesn't jinx it.

My 20" is fine too. I didn't install the update, since I wasn't experiencing any crash. I got it at the end of september and it was built week 37 of... 1997?? I guess I'm using the wrong site

[Edit]
I upgraded to Leopard, and installed the iMac Update 1.3, and my computer still doesn't freeze.

My 24" iMac that I bought in mid-August (from a retailer) freezes occasionally, but only when I play Age of Empires III. I have all the latest updates from Apple including the one(s) that were supposed to fix this.

My 24" 2.4Ghz iMac feezes every once in a while. I'm running Leopard with all updates. I'm not near an Apple store so taking in back would be a major PITA!

Not to sound rude, but isn't having a computer that spontaneously stops working without reason (or probably notice) also a major PITA? How far away is "not near?" Maybe it's less of a pain than you're thinking.
