Just a suggestion; those who have the new C2D Macbook Pros may want to check their capability to burn DVD's, connect to FW800 drives, you know, everything before the 14 day exchange policy is up. I noticed my MBP was having trouble capturing from my Canon GL2 camcorder when connected to a certain exterior drive. I then used a different exterior drive and it worked so the fault must not be in my MBP. Guess I will have to initialize the inoperable drive, which by the way worked fine on my Powerbook. Anyway check as many ports and functions of your unit as you can; you don't want to be stuck with a faulty MBP when the option to exchange it is gone.

Also, the 14-day return policy is a primarily for no-questions-asked, just-changed-your-mind returns. If there's something actually wrong with your machine, you're covered by the actual warranty for a a full year after purchase. So it's not the end of the world if you find a fault after the first 14 days.

I see your point but would rather a quick swap than to send it in for repair and risk getting it back with other damage or a long repair time. Am I correct in assuming the 14 day return policy does not include a restocking fee?

Got mine this morning. 15" 2.16GHz; 2GB RAM, 160GB HD.
Very nice. An upgrade from a 12" 867MHz bought in the summer of 2003.

One week later: here. Advice: order by Thursday for fastest ship time.
Installing apps, copying docs.
Don't see much of the grain unless I'm 8" away; i.e., a bit of a non-issue. The bottom few mm of the display seemed brighter at first, but after it had warmed up, it appears fine. No obvious dead pixels.
I got the 160GB, but it's "only" the Hitachi. Oh, wait, it is a perpindicular drive—w00t!

Overall, it's so fricking fast. OK, gotta run.

Thanks for the tip, but presently isnoop returns only "There is no data available yet for this tracking number. Please check back later." for what I think may be my tracking number.
Anyway, I have a feeling it is being sent by horse carriage: 13 days from the Netherlands to Switzerland?!

2.33Ghz, 120Gb, matte display. Picked it up from the Delaware store. $200 off with the government discount and saved ~$125 on tax. It is the first Mac I have purchased that was really what I wanted, not what I settled for. I love it. It really is everything I had hoped.
BTW, I looked at both the glossy and matte displays. I was seriously considering the glossy. It took me about 7.7 seconds to determine that the reflections off the gloss would drive me crazy. I seriously recommend seeing them side-by-side if you have reservations.

I received my stock 2.33GHz/2GB/120GB on Thursday afternoon (we have an internal VAR and they were able to get me one very quickly and at an unbelievable price). So far, I'm incredibly impressed with this machine. About six years ago I switched exclusively to laptops (except for a Mac mini that I bought when they were released as a small home server) and my new MBPs speed just blows me away. I'm coming from a 2003 PB 1.25GHz/1.25GB/80GB and am just amazed at the speed. Like others, I got mine with the matte display figuring that the glossy would be too hard on my eyes -- my office has lots of light sources and I wasn't going to roll the dice on having glare in my face all day.
The sheer amount of new features in my MBP is still dawning on me, but it's mostly the little things that I'm loving: two fingered scrolling on the trackpad, the built-in iSight and, oh year, two cores! Having essentially a dual-proc machine on my lap is a bit mind-blowing. And having 256MB of VRAM is great, considering that my first TiBook shipped with 256MB of system RAM!

I like the new MacBook Pros, but how can they be 3x faster across the board? I tried a 15" MBP Core Duo 2, and it didn't seem any faster than my Powerbook G4. I always read that everything launches in 1 or 2 bounces. But I found many programs taking 5 or 6 bounces on the MBP I tried. Web browsing wasn't any faster either.

They're 3X faster in theoretical performance based on the CPU. Anything that puts a greater stress on other components, especially the hard drive, may not seem as quick in practice. I'm wondering about the number of bounces, though - I've heard others say Intel Macs load things faster, even on a laptop.
For CPU speed, the real tests are heavily CPU-dependent functions. Try playing a 1080p movie on the new system versus the old!

Just got mine earlier this week after it spent five days in the customs house at the airport waiting to be cleared. (The guy who was supposed to clear it went on holiday and didn't leave a subordinate the authority to sign a piece of paper. I live in Lebanon. It's frustrating.) But I have a 2.33GHz with 2GB of RAM and the glossy screen and it's frickin' awesome. Love it. Fast, sleek and well-put together.
In terms of speed, it's very, very zippy. Rosetta apps launch slowly, which is to be expected, but universal apps are quick -- and even quick on subsequent launches. I'll quit and relaunch Mail.app, for instance and it will literally be open before 1 bounce. (Initial launches are somewhat slower.)
Despite the shipping costs and customs charges, this is a hell of a value. Now if I could only sell my 1.67GHz PowerBook G4 and 20" iMac G5 and make back some cash.

OK, got my MBP 17" C2D on Friday. Hurray for me. It's my first new Mac in almost 10 years (G3), so I feel like a Mac newbee again.
What do I need to add to this baby? Any recommendations for software, virus protection, firewall, etc.? I'm already getting Adobe Web Bundle 2.3 (Creative Suite 2.3 & Studio 8), plus Quark 7, and the (gasp!) Microsoft Office.
Thanks!

Owners of new MBP's may want to add this alarm software; it works from the vibration sensor already in your laptop, and though not foolproof, at least it helps your laptop from being tampered with or stolen. Besides, it's truly one of the coolest free softwares I have used; your supplied Apple Remote turns it on and off with a "chirp" sound just like a car.

I received my 17" C2D today and have been playing with it all night. I got it loaded with apps and so far i have yet to run into any issues. I have installed parallels and I must say I am feeling less satisfied with windows than I remember being in the past. Either way, good performace all around. I choose the 100gb 7200rpm for speed over capacity. check the latest barefeats article summarizing the hdd options for the mpb c2d for further info. I will definetly buy a 2gb upgrade to get to 3gb when the prices go down. Oh yeah, i ran the pixel check program and my lcd is free of any pixel defects. Now, the uneven backlighting is another issue altogether... Matted screen btw. I have not noticed any graininess like others have mentioned. My previous last gen powerbook's screen is identical in that regard too.

I got my 15" MBP C2D 2.33 and am amazed at the speed at which everything starts up. Coming from a PB 15" 1.5, It's money worth spending. While I am elated at the shiney quality of my new hotness, this is the first mac that I've had which has given me problems.
Yes, I got the dreaded battery problem. I've tried resetting both the PMU and the System management console but to no avail. Once both have been reset, it comes up "calculating" and goes back to the cross. It seems to work fine but whether it's charging or not, I don't know. No lights on the battery pop up when you plug the magsafe in too.
From what I've read, MOST of it points to a battery issue. I'm hoping that a logic board won't need replacing HOWEVER having only had the machine for a few hours, they said I'm covered by the DOA/Replacement machine thingy. I'll have to wait an additional week but that's better than a kick in the nuts...
Plus, the outside battery case kinda looks splotchy too so I'm tending towards saying it's a manky battery.
In the mean time, I'm going to install bootcamp see what other fun I can dig up :-)

Ordered (2.33GHz, 160G drive) online on Monday 13th November received in Mountain View a week later. I have been too busy playing and configuring to post here! It's my first Mac, coming from Fedora on a Dell D810 and so far I am very impressed. Have to get used to the *commercial* software thing but I'm more than willing to actually pay for good software. Hardware is ace so far (except screen is a little too frosted for my liking and fonts are rather over anti-aliased IMHO).
Cheers!
Nick.

You certainy are aware of the fact that all the Adobe stuff (except Acrobat 8) and M$ Office are running under Rosetta, i.e. slowly, on your new 'book? I would seriously consider waiting with the Adobe Web bundle until CS3 ships -- maybe around April '07. CS3 should be Universal binary across the board, and given Adobe's sometimes rather greedy ways, my geuss is you'll have to pay dearly to upgrade 2.3 > 3.0.

Don't get me wrong because I understand but all this talk about holding off your computer purchase because of a couple of companies that haven't crossed over to the UB set of apps is just ludicrous. I understand that Photoshop and MS Office are major apps in the computer industry but to say that they are the only apps that anyone would ever use "figuratively speaking" and hold off purchasing a beautiful computer that that has hundreds of very useful apps and is usable with the current available non UB apps on the market makes no sense.
It's not like everyone that uses Photoshop and MS Office is going to go out an immediately buy a new UB copy. These apps do cost in access of $400-600.00. Many people will continue to use their PPC apps long after the UB's arrive.
Think of how many people still using OS9?

Well, actually, holding off one's computer purchase was not at all what I was thinking (or, for that matter, speaking/writing) of -- apologies if this was not clear; english clearly is not my first nor even second language.
Rather, what I'd like to stress is holding off buying upgrades to software suites that will be obsolete in a few months, which do not run at full speed, and which will have to be upgraded at substantial cost pretty soon.

Picked up a 2.33Ghz, 2GB RAM, 120GB HD, Glossy MB Pro a few days ago. Quite the upgrade, coming from a 1.2Mhz 12" iBook G4 with 768MB RAM.
The thing is just amazing so far - no problems at all. Truly liberating being able to do things mobile that I'd normally do on the G5 tower.
Playing around with Boot Camp 1.1.2 is working well, with a 20GB partition dedicated to the Half-Life 2 Holiday 2006 DVD
