It just keeps opening and closing – at random. And no longer mounts discs. Totally weird. Anyone else seen this? Plus I can't force quit the Finder. Gah, it's all going pear-shaped.

No, all stock standard stuff. Quicksilver 733 G4, all extraneous gadgets unplugged, re-installed 10.4, it kept booting into open firmware (opt key sorted that out). Mirror RAID set-up, just picked other drive. I think I have some serious backing up to do while this thing is still functional.

%#$@T$# what a PITA.

True.

I assume it's opening and closing on startup and randomly whatever the computers doing.

The idea behind disconnecting the keyboard and mouse was to see if it stops.

Ha ha. Maybe it's trying to get you to clean it.

Anyway, did unplugging the keyboard and mouse make any difference?

It could be that the button on the CD drive is stuck and it's opening and closing/.

No, I already tried all that. I suspect it's a software glitch. May have to do clean install. On a brighter note: and to derail my own thread; we FINALLY have itms in Australia, happy days. Check out Bernard Fanning and Missy Higgins for some cool toons. Joy!

Does it do it through boot up?

Check the button on the drive isn't stuck - take front case/bezel off etc.

I have a G4 model before this one and mine opens at startup also. It does this since i put in a new DVD drive. The old drive doesnt do it.

I had a drive on a Windoze machine do this. It was absolutely insane. Mine still worked though, and I was sometimes able to burn cd's with the drive. Every once in a while it would pop out, and then in mid movement would freak out and have somewhat of a CD drive seizure and just shake and do crazy stuff. I just got a different drive and the problem went away. It was nuts though.
maybe you've been brainwashed too.

Hmmm, tax return just arrived, might be time to get a new drive (Superdrive). I had that swapped out for a CD–RW when I bought it 4 years ago ($AU2000 extra at time, no thanks). Any ideas on what to get, so I can restore iDVD functionality without the Hurtz/Phurz hack etc etc.
