Time Machine a bit aggressive?

This is sort of continuing on from this thread.
I now have a shiny 4TB External. I made two partitions, one smaller for exclusive Time Machine use.
Time machine now wants to back up every hour?. I get how this could be useful if your workflow and/or business relied on constantly creating new data and needing to back it up, but I basically expected to have options for a weekly backup late at night when I won't be using the computer. To my surprise the Time Machine pref panel has what amounts to two options...turn on the automatic backups you have no say when they will occur, or do it manually which kind of defeats the purpose of using time machine.

It always did this afaik. Its why I turned it off and backup manually but irregularly

Time Machine has done hourly backups since its inception a decade ago.
